Lube

I need to change my lube in my Transmission and Transfer case. They are in my 1989 Dodge Cummins truck. What is the best to use? I like AMSOIL. Do I just use regular 90w gear lube or what?

Transfer case
-90w gl-5 or use 80w gl-5 if used below -10 degrees. uses 4.5 pints
Auto tranny
-ATF type 7176 or Dexron type 2 if ATF 7176 is not available uses. 8.4 quarts
Getrag 5 speed manual
-5w30 motor oil, synthetic is recommended. I use redline MTL synchromesh fluid, others use royal purple and amsoil synchromesh fluid and like it.
-uses 3.5 quarts, but overfilling it a quart will help it live a longer happier life

That's what I do. I use a small funnel to reduce the chance of spilling.

I pull the T-case shifter boot and use a tranny funnel.

A nifty custom dipstick. It's a piece of coat hanger bent into a "J". You check the level by hanging it over the edge of the elbow (makes it repeatable) and then pulling it out. I marked the stick when I filled the trans.

+1. Pull the shift tower out. Put it in N before you do. As long as you have no leaks/no worries...
