low fuel pressure

On my 90, 3/4 ton 4x4, the fuel pressure gage seems to be connected directly to the throttle pedal.
last week I was pulling a 9000 lb trailer. Fuel pressure was about 7lbs but the more I pressed the throttle down, the lower the fuel press, to the point of zero pressure when pushed hard. Is that low pressure going to damage the VE ?
The pump has had the smoke screw turned two turns, fuel pin turned for max fuel, pump rotated toward the head as far as mounting bolts allow, home made intake pipe from turbo, 4" exhaust. (the fuel tank has been cleaned and the filter has about 1200 miles on it.) This is non intercooled.
I plan to put in a 2nd gen lift pump soon.
I need to pull a 5000 lb trailer in a day or two. Should I baby it to keep some pressure so i don't hurt the VE.
By the way the power with this setup is sweet.
Thanks,
Ray

That sounds about normal for the stock lift pump.
