loose brake caliper fix?

loose brake caliper fix?

I have an annoying rattle over bumps. I believe I've narrowed it down to the sloppy calipers.

I've heard you can buy an oversized wedge and spring kit to take up the slop but I was wondering what anyone else has done to cure this problem. I'm tempted to add some material ( bead of weld) to the caliper mount and grind flat.

I've also heard of swapping to Chevy calipers. Has anyone done this? Do you need just the calipers and mounts or the whole outer, including hub, spindle and rotor?

I had a Ford 60 once and they were so sloppy they would fall right off and hang from the brake hose. I tack welded the wedge in on that one, it was an off road only truck though.

Hey Marf75. I just re-arched the spring in the caliper and that solved the problem. It did come back a little after about 10K. But re-arched one of them again and no problem since.

Never thought of this bring the cause of my annoying rattle/clank over bumps. I'm going to have to check that

Yes chevy 1ton do interchange with the 4wd trucks. dont know about 2wd

Welding,, you can buy brand new unloaded raybestos calipers for 48$ at RA

I meant welding on the caliper MOUNT itself. I've already replaced one caliper and its the loser of the two.

As far as welding on the mount, now that I think of it, is that cast?

Because it's spring steel, I had to clamp it to the bench and use a little heat and force. I didn't move it much, but it added more force to hold the caliper in place and solved the rattle. Obviously bobva's link showed the ultimate rebuild fix, but happy with my temporary fix.

I bent the spring on one side today but yet to test drive it as time was a little scarce today.
I put the spring, arch up, over a piece of 3/4" round stock then grabbed a pair of good ole 2 position adjustable pliers, spread the handles of the pliers out to lock in behind the little tabs on the spring, and gave the tip of the pliers a couple wacks with a beater. Hillbilly?? maybe but it worked, time will tell for how long. Thanks diesel!

After further inspection, the passenger side spit out the spring and the wedge was half way out rubbing the inside of the wheel. So two warrentied, reman calipers will be mounted tomorrow because the seal around the piston is shot. They were replaced 11/15/11 and already shabby!


As for the rattling, loose caliper. Im thinking its the inner pad rattling.

The little clips were missing on one side and the other side had one, that the tab was worn off of. So ill report back after reassembly with the clips on the inner pads and new/ reman calipers.

Hey 93-12, check out your inner pads and let me know what you discover.

Rattle fixed!

It was the inner pads.
