Kingpin overhaul - upper pin source?

I am prepping my front d60 to install in my crew and I found some wear and some some surprises.

First, when I cleaned on the black grease that was once red off the upper pin I found something that I had not seen on the three or so other kingpin front ends I have had apart.

Is this part of a removal tool? I have not seen this thing before.

Second, The drivers side upper pin is seriously worn on the outboard side. Notice in the pic the sharp edge on one top of the pin. Compared to the inboard edge, there is a lot of meat worn away. The top outer edge is knife sharp.

Does anybody have a source for the upper pins. I have found the bearing/race kits and the upper bushing kit, but I definitely want to replace this pin.

Third, look at this mess of sealant that somebody crammed in here to avoid replacing a dust cap that they had punched holes in.

The great gobs of goo did not work. The bearings were toast and take a look at the condition of the race. It looks like maybe somebody did a lot of straight line driving on dry bearings. It is the only thing I can think of that would cause this wear.

anyway, please help me source upper pins. Thanks, Eric.

That insert is part of a camber repair kit, probably due to the work kingpin. I also used 4WD Factory for my parts.

Thanks, I ordered parts. I did not order the hex wrench for the upper pin. Thought I could weld a socket onto one of those nutjob thingies. Anybody know how hard these are to loosen and torque specs for the new ones?

What kind of condition were the rest of the upper parts (bushing, eccentric, cross pin) ? that's not a cheap kit and might be worth a few bucks to someone that might need it, or if you do just in case you don't end up within spec after your rebuild. SPC Proformance makes them if you do end up needing to reuse it.

OK, I see what you are talking about Bogie. I found this picture. There were not any other parts beside the nut looking thing. The eccentric, pin, and other parts in the pic are nowhere to be seen. There was just a large white plastic bushing, spring, and a couple of nylon washers.

That is what I have on my 91. They come from Specialty Auto parts. Works great for minor corrections.

Did mine two weeks ago, got everything from Six States Dist. a Dana/Spicer dealer. $262 for the kingpins, bushings, springs, washers, lower bearing, race, dustcap and two new rotors with pads. I use a 7/8 duplex lugnut, a 6' cheaterpipe and a little heat to remove the kingpins and a really large torque wrench to install them. A little green loctite for insurance too.

Well, I got tired of breaking home made tools and ordered the giant hex wrench I should have ordered with the parts. Hopefully I can start reassembly in a couple of days.

I did find eccentrics in the lower bearing race area. I guess I will start out without any caster camber correction as I am using all new parts. I am hoping these were in there to offset wear rather than to combat a bent housing or something ugly like that.

I went to the local metal/fab shop ad bought 2 feet of 7/8'' hex stock. A torch to heat and bend it into an allen wrench. I also used heat to remove one king pin as i was bending my allen wrench trying to get it out. Heat made it loosen up quick.
