Keep an eye on those rear spindle nuts...

While on a road trip towing to a rockcrawling comp down in Bend, OR I had my driverside rear spindle nut back off on the D70. Luckily I was on a backroad going slow when it happended because the whole hub, wheel, and axle assembly started to come out. Thank god I wasnt on the freeway. I had never had the rear end apart was surprised that it was just a single nut, unlike any FF axle I had worked on before. Luckily Baxters had the bearings and seal, got a GM 14bolt spindle nut from a friend and was able to patch it up on the side of the road. I will definetly be converting both sides to the double nut and locking tabed washer set up because I dont trust the factory setup anymore! Dodged a bullet with this one...

Anybody know the N number and the W number that fits the front and rear spindles on our trucks? Various sizes are shown on this page:

Wink Here Is The Good Stuff

I despise those soft steel single-nuts.

I have yet to see one that the bearing didn't cut a groove in, thus loosening the bearing adjustment.

I have NEVER had a locking-tab-washer double-nut system do this.

I would also like to file those Dana part numbers away for future references.

Well its been a bit but after extensive searching the components I thought would work ended up being for the smaller spindle D60. I was able to locate a new stock nyloc hex nut but not the nuts from the quad 4x4 site. I wasnt able to find the parts in the reference books either.

I have removed dozens of dozens of those nuts/bearings and have NEVER found a washer of any type between the nut and bearing.

Do you have a picture ??

Thanks.

Same here, all of mine have never had the ugly washer behind them. But after reading this, I went ahead and installed the ugly washer behind the nylock nut on a brake job this weekend. I had a pair laying around.

FSM and the parts book both show the washer. I guess a lot of folks leave them out.

Old GM 14 bolt nut and snap ring works on the 1989 rearend but I cut new keys from 1/4 inch stock. The GM keys seemed too loose to me.
