KDP stands for killer dowel pin. Do a forum search and there will be plenty of information about it. It's a pin inside the gear case that is set into the block. It eventually rattles out and usually goes inbetween a couple gears and costs mucho $$$$$ to fix the damage. Most people get their BHAF's at NAPA or some similar part stores. Here's part numbers for it from a different thread.

What are the part numbers for the BHAF?

What i have been told and read sys that the KDP isnt a HUGE concern for the first gen engines, but it sure is a good insurance policy to tab it. There was never a recall on the engines due to the KDP. It is a alignment dowel located under the timing gear cover that can vibrate loose, causing extensive damage to teh gears and cover. Ther are "kits" for corrected the problem or instructions for making a 'fix'.
Wannadiesel prides himself on "killing" or fixing them and is probably your best source of info on this site for the KDP.
Id suggest Pm'ing him and get any info you need, but read the stickey first....

I would highly suggest it be one of the first things you do. I would not drive one without it being tabbed and the case bolts locktited. A few of them have fallen out lately and it is not pretty. The least you get is a broken timing case which requires the cam to be removed to replace and a lot of expense, the worse I have seen is the cam breaking off and major damage to the front end of the engine. Chances are yours will not fall out but it is not that hard to fix for peace of mind. Mine was still in place but some of the case bolts had loosened a bit.

The KDP is also a second gen problem all the way to a 2000 I beleave. If you haven't done it you better think twice about it. On another site I belong to a dowl pin decided to come out and proceded to punch a hole in the gear cover that alone is around $500.00 to replace they found it in the oil pan it missed the gears this guy is so lucky not having to replace the cam, cam gear, pump gear and what ever else it would have decided to take out. Not fixin the KDP is your choise. You have been warned.

You can do it yourself. Take a look in the sticky and on TST's web site.

I did mine it's not that bad. Instructions are easy to follow. It just takes alittle time to do it.

It is easy, I referenced TST's site, and then got it done. I am doing mine on my second truck tonight. I helped a friend do a front gear case replacement on a 98 Freightliner w/ a 5.9 24v, KDP came out at 250,000. It was a big expense and lots of labor. There is lots of info and tips here on the net on how to get the components out of the way to get in there and get it done.
