Going from a Tundra to the ol' Dodge is definitely a change. I guess I havent been around the old 12v enough to know if my truck sounds normal. To me there is an awful lot of clicking and ticking and more clicking. I know mechanical valves are always kinda noisy (I even adjusted mine), and its going to have the "diesel" noise, on top of what I expect to be a lift pump going out the window...so......Tell me guys, am I normal? Are all of our trucks noisy? Ive tried a straight pipe, but I can still hear it!

 

YUP, they are very very noisy..

I have tried alot to quiet it down , and still no luck..

 

That ain't noise. It is sweet sound of perfection and prescison. Music to my ears

 

You'll get used to it. After awhile it'll be the quietest thing you've ever been in (that'll be to the hearing loss )

 

my truck is the same way, i have to crank up the radio to hear it over the awesome 12v drone and the clanks!

 

It was a little unnerving to me at first, too. But after awhile, and knowing the truck is healthy, I've gotten used to what it sounds like. A little different under cetain throttle positions, deceleration, and various rpm at these conditions, etc. I think in the long run that will make it easier to spot truly "ab"normal noise.

 

my "noise" (music to my ears too) stops almost completely when I get off the pedal so I'm thinking combustion noise accounts for much of my clangs and clicks. 'Course there are those valves still needing adjustment, er when I get to it ....lol

 

Heck, I thought I was in heaven when I went from an over-valved truck to this one. I actually think the first gens are the best sounding of the bunch, just loud enough and not too quiet like the third gens. My 24-valver always sounded like it rattled a little too much, even with the valves set with in specification. I know there was nothing wrong with it....it's just the nature of the beast. I love the way first gens they bark to life when first started!! Music to my ears...followed by a big black "puff"!!

 

I have 300+k miles, and when the valves are adjusted to factory spec, There is no valvetrain noise that i can hear over my 4" straight piped truck.
Engine, well YES, valve clatter NO

 

My truck has recieved a body swap from e/c to reg cab long box. There is no insulation on the firewall so there is quite a drony noise in the cab. The pipe is also straight and the tires are big ugly things that throw stones. So I think that all of this accounts for some of the noise. i am going to try and find some bulk rolls of 1" insulation that I can try and stick it to the firewall to kill some of the engine noise.
Other than that this thing purrs like a Cummins.

 

What?! You'll have to speak up, I can't hear you over this noisy truck!

 

I'm running a huge very quiet muffler with the companion resonator in the four inch exhaust, along with a TAG-III (essentially includes the silencer ring) in the turbo fed by a totally sealed air intake.
I've got 5/16" thick shredded rubber under all the floor covering with 3/8" thick RubaTex (foam rubber) on the side and back cab walls as well as the doors. The interior roof has 1/2" RubaTex.

Ignoring the turbo shrill, . . . . the engine is loud with mechanical sounds.

Especially with 38psig of alcoholic breath!

 

I went from a 99 24 valve (still have it) to my 1993 12 valve and to me the 93 is quieter. Now the 99 rides and handles a ton better then the 93 but it is also alot more $$ to repair and seems to need work more often then the 93.

 

Took me a while to get used to my truck clicking and ticking, but its great

 

I find my 2000 is the same way, loud, rattly, more expensive to keep on the road, stupid VP.
