I've been thinking
I had a thought ( yeh it's scary I know ). Has anyone thought about or done a custom exhaust manifold/header. I have been looking at a couple of different 3 piece jobs and got to thinking. I can make the flanges at work on the bridge port and if I get some 1 1/2" or 2' exhaust pipe and make my own manifold. I would make a 6 into 1 and get a T3 flange and weld it all together. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas as to if and/or how you think it would work, I can't see why not but I figured I would get a general consensus on the whole thing. I just want to try to get the exhaust to flow a little better. Plus I like to build things.
You're better off with an HTT or ATS 3-piece manifold.
If you insist on building one, here are a few suggestions:
You can't support weight of the turbo with the header, you would need to make bracketry to hold the turbo. Equal length tubes are not necessary or helpful on a turbodiesel. You want the exhaust to get to the turbo as quickly as possible so as not to lose any of the energy (heat) that it contains. A thermal barrier coating is a very good idea with a header. A tubular version of the stock manifold would work better than a "bundle of snakes" - which is why I suggested an aftermarket manifold.

That is an interesting thought. If you are putting in twins you are already fabbing and (maybe) machining pipes. So why not make a custom manifold (or mod an ATS or an HTT) to make the twins installation neater?

If you do decide to make a header with equal length, make it a 3 into 1 and then them two two ends into one...................If you look real close to the stock cast iron manifold you will find that it is a primitive version of just that.
It not just a log with 6 inlet to it.........................

There is a company that has been making them for a few months now. ive seen the site or seen them on ebay, cant remember, but cant find them right now. Nice looking, but theirs were going for a grand.
