An inch away from posting "Free truck"

After 8 years of love and attention my pig failed on me today. Starter packed it in in -32c weather. (engine was at operating temp to boot)
I love it to death but am not happy with the old girl at the moment.
First time I have had to leave it somewhere other than the acreage. (weird feeling indeed)
If I don't get love back tom. I'm tempted to put a "free" sign in the window.
I'm feeling very spurned!!!!!!

You have to realize its old iron. New trucks break down all the time. Atleast you didnt pay almost $50k for it, and if you give it away. Call me!

Stay warm you Canadian

DO NOT get a new one, rebuild your old one. If you put a new one on from advance, orielys or the like you'll be replacing it again in a year.

New brushes and contacts and your good to go.

I had 42 bucks in doing mine. That gave me new brushes, solonoid plunger and contacts. I'm no starter repair guru, but it went together easy.

I know how frustrating it can be at times, but it shouldn't go on the block for the demise of a readily available, common wear item.

Great info on the starter repair...think I'll order the parts and have them waiting for when the time comes.

I take my starters to a Truck Electric shop to have them rebuilt, although you can usually get by with just replacing the brushes and contacts there is a lot more to rebuilding them, the coils are checked using a Megger for insulation breakdown, the armature is tested on a Growler for shorts and the commutator is undercut along with the bearings and bendix drive being replaced.

I have had quite a few dead out of the box remanufactured parts from Pep Boys and Auto Zone.

The shop I take mine to have rows and rows of Delco's and Leece Neville's waiting for customers to walk in and purchase.

That is the wright way for shure Jim but not everybody has a megger or growler, or a repair shop, I do have all that stuff at my beconed call at work, but when i'm at home in a pinch you can clean it really good with solvent preshure wash it gently put it in the oven at (300*) for 3 hours cool it off and check from bar to bar on the armature with a ohm meter for a circut, and check the field coils to the starter frame for a ground, shoe shine the commutator with 180 grt emery cloth get a razor knife and scrape out the slots, shoe shine again with 320, blow it out with air, assemble and go. remember if there is some ground a 12v starter will work fine with quite a bit of ground, like when you have been driven in the rain for 2 hours if you pulled off your starter and megged it with a 500v megger it would be totaly grounded but still work like new.
