Impressed!
Impressed!
The first thing I can say is... I'm Impressed!!!!!
I have a 1992 Dodge D250 / Cummins with 165k miles. I bought it used last summer and it's one of the cleanest 13 year old vehicles I've ever seen. I hope to keep it for a very long time.
Thus far, I have seen nothing under the 1st generation section about the KDP. Am I just missing something or is the KDP not a concern for this series engine?
I may have jumped the gun, but I just ordered a Timing Cover S&G Kit from Advance Auto Parts and was preparing to tear into this as early as tomorrow morning. Now I am unsure as to whether to go ahead or not until I know for sure that this engine does, in fact, need this modification.
I'm a pretty decent mechanic, so I've been told, and I am not the least bit afraid to tackle this, however, if it doesn't need fixed, I would rather leave it alone.
Advice please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ..... and ThanX in advance!!

This site holds a wealth of information! Again, I am impressed!
My only question now is whether or not the S&G Kit I get from Advance Auto parts will be as complete or equal to the kits mentioned in the forums that came from Cummins, etc.
Does anyone know of a link that might have a photo of the Cummins parts so I have something to compare with. Advance's Kit is Felpro, and I do know that is a reputable name.
Many thanks to those who answered, and to those who posted information!

Welcome to the site! You are right, there is a wealth of info here and it is just a fun place to hang out! Make sure to fill out your signature so everyone will know what you have when you post. Post some pics also!
I have heard of the timing case bolts backing out and dropping into the timing gears on the 1st gens MORE OFTEN than I've heard of the KDP backing out... but, the KDP CAN back out on the 1st gens also...
you've already got the kit, pull the cover, and one at a time, pull the timing case bolts, clean the bolts and bolt holes w/ some brake cleaner, hit them w/ some lock-tite and re-torque them...
tab the KDP, button it back up and never worry about it again.

wannadiesel did mine and it was starting to come out- Thanks Dave- Its worth doing for piece of mind. Oh yeah, welcome aboard, dont be afraid to ask questions, we dont bite.... hard
Well folks, the KDP has officially been neutered!
I would post a pic, but don't believe I am allowed.
My KDP was tight and had not moved, but I tabbed it and It's done.
I found two loose bolts and put red Loctite on them and retightened them.
The whole job took about 6 hours and I had no problems.
For what it may be worth to others, (remember my truck is a 92) I drained about a gallon of coolant and removed the top radiator hose. I did not disturb the big fan nut, but rather removed the 4 bolts from the adapter block and pulled the whole thing. I had plenty of room and it was easy to work on.
My S&G kit was Felpro from Advance Auto Parts and cost about $35. My original seal said Cummins, but other than that was identical to the one I bought from Advance. The part number is: TCS 45902
My sincere thanks to all of you who offered support and info. You are, as they say, PRICELESS!

Don't wanna sound dumb!! But, what is the KDP? And, if there is issues with it backing out. What do ya have to do to fix it? And also there was mention about the timing case bolts backing out and falling into the gears. Is this something I should check? Thanks..........

Do a search on KDP. It is the Killer Dowel Pin. One of this fine engine's few flaws. It is a dowel pin that can become loose in it's bore, fall into the timing gears and cause thousands of dollars' damage. It probably happens to less than 5% of the 89-99 model year engines that have the potential for the problem, but the prevention is a simple matter. Do it before you become a statistic.
