ignition switch

Crancked my truck this morning fine, got back home turned it off just fine. Got back in it to go to work went to crank it and the key just goes forward til the stop with no tension at any point(so it wont turn over). Long story short is there a rod or something that may of come loose or is it time for a new switch?

I've seen that happen several times and it's generally NOT the ignition switch, but the lock cylinder. There's a cam on the end of it that meshes with the ignition switch, and that cam breaks. It's only available with a lock cylinder package.

What's involved with changing the switch out? Do I need any special tools or is it a pretty straight forward simple hand tool job ?

You just need some torex bits. The dealer can rekey the new lock cylinder to your old key.

Were it me, I would eliminate all that column mess and move all of the functions into the dash.

The last two winters, my Ford has been warning me that something could go haywire in the key-switch; so, I have been getting all of my ducks in a row to just bypass the whole mess.

A locksmith can rekey it too. Usually costs more than the stupid cylinder did.

I've always rekeyed my own, but they're pretty finicky. You need a steady hand, and good eyes and lots of patience if you happen to drop one of those tiny little springs on the floor.
