well here's the update: I took the pump back off, and found that I had spun the keyway, and the pump shaft was spinning in the gear. No damage to the gear from what I can tell, and I got the (very soft!) key out. I polished the shaft with some sandpaper and it looks good. I'm a little nervous to try this again. Whats the trick to making sure the key is lined up? I thought it went right in (it looked like it did). I then rocked the pump on the studs to make sure the key was engaged. It still screwed up! I can't keep doing this over and over!!! Any suggestions?

It can be done a half dozen ways,.....rotate the pump shaft so the keyway is up (can't fall out from gravity). Then roll the engine to fit key. I don't think you can rotate (jump) a tooth with the timing cover on. I tryed it plenty times and there's not enuff room to lift the timing gear high enuff off the cam gear. Me Thinks

If your truck didn't start ever, then I'd say that when you kinda spilled the parts out of it while trying to change the o-ring on the truck, you retimed it 180 out, inside the pump when putting all the parts back in.

Update again. After the truck ran and quite for no reason, I found out why. I took the pump to the diesel pump shop here to have the timing set and the pump locked. The guy showed me that the pump shaft was going up and down but not spinning. I took it back to work and upon removing the head, I found that the pump shaft broke in 4 pieces, along with one of the cam plate return springs. No one there was really sure why, but either way it blew up. It did run for 25 minutes or so... Oh well now my pump is junk. Amazing how badly trying to do something for the right reasons has totally backfired in my face! I've got a guy that wants to buy the truck as is, and put it together himself. I think I'm just going to take the loss and move on. Its just not worth the headache!

Thanks all for the help and suggestions the past couple days.

There are a lot of VE pumps out there used and reman, I say give it another try, you will have learned something new and have the satisfaction of having fixed it yourself and of course get a fun truck to drive. JMO.

I have a line on one from a guy on the site. If the guy thats wanting to buy it lowballs me too bad, I'll have to get a used one and try again. I want to get rid of it since I already got another truck, but I cant afford to take too big of a loss on it. I don't normally give up this easy, but I need the money from the truck, its cold and it doesn't fit in my garage, and its not the least bit enjoyable to work on. Its lifted with a body lift. I have to stand on a stool to get over the fender and the engine is down in a hole!

That sounds all too familiar, except the part about the garage; I don't have a garage.

At least I can see what I am working on, actually get a wrench on it, and know exactly what I am doing; not so with most of the over-complicated junk on the road these days.

that would be the problem with my situation... I didn't know exactly what I was doing! I have never had so much stress with what should have been a pretty straight forward repair!
