Hx-40W?

Hello gentlemen, I just got my used hx-40w that I bought off a eBay, i've allready got a rebuild kit coming but had a question r two. Anybody know the exhaust wheel measurement on this turbo? I would really love to try an put a 12cm exhaust housing on it, I think it has an 18 on it now. And if the exhaust wheel that is allready in it is to big for a 12cm, how big a deal is it to find a 70mm exhaust wheel?

A typical hx-40 has a 65mm exhaust wheel, the smallest off the shelf housing is a 16cm. I'm sure with some machining a smaller could fit. But if you want to take a 12cm from a hx-35 you will be back down to a 3" exhaust outlet.

Good luck with finding anything. I did the same thing about a year ago. I bought one off eBay with the 18cm exhaust and a T4 flange. When I bought it I didn't know anything about turbos except for what I read on the diesel forums. I bought a T4 to T3 adapter and then realised I was going threw a lot of work for not much improvement. I asked about what you are trying to do on this site and on several other Dodge and diesel sites and no one had much info to give. I tried calling a local shop with not much luck also. I finally bought a HE351CW on eBay for about the same price as the HX40 and I am installing it now. The HX40 sits in my basement. If you find a way or place to change the exhaust housing please post what you did. I would still like to try the Hx40 idea.

Mine was from a volvo, had a weird down pipe attachment and I couldn't find a flange that would work, so I ended up buying a regular 16cm housing with a regular 4" outlet from my local turbo shop. So then it bolted right in, with just re-welding the flange into the down pipe.

It runs well with the ddp3's, keeps it cool while towing, the only down side is spool when it is hot and lugging. I've got way too much fuel at low rpms.

I have a he351VE that i'm going to put on now.

Also keep in mind that I live at 8k feet, the lowest I go is 5k above sea level. at lower elevations and flat terrain i'm sure the spool and smoke would be much easier to deal with!

So ap, based on what uv said, is the hx-40 a good way to go? Will it had a good amount a fuel, or is it kinda sluggy?

I think with you being in texas, that it will be fine. It has kept up all the fuel I can throw at it while towing up some real hills. and I mean under 1200deg exhaust temps while towing.

So its pretty good, just gets a little sluggish up here at altitude when the temps get into the 90's.

Keep in mind we have some THIN air up here.

I have one of those hybrid, HX35/40 Dodgezilla, it does OK up here, but it ran really well when I was in Texas. I am adding an S475 to the mix here shortly, so I will see how it does in a set of compounds.

BTW AP I was the assistant superintendant for the new fire station there in Golden, on Washington. One of the rare instances in construction where I can say, hey I built that landmark!!

Ok, thanks guys, I hope I like it a little better that the h1c, cause that would be a bummer. Btw, where's the cheapest place online to order a 4 inch downpipe?

Diamond Exhaust, (?) I think that's what they're called. Or you could try TV Diesel, which I think is the agent for them. Maybe someone else will chime in if I got that wrong.
