HX-40 turbo

Hey every one, I have a chance to get a hx-40 turbo. Now is a hx-40 a little big for a 1st gen. I plan on putting in a set of DDP injectors, and some more pump tweaks. Now what are every ones thought on this?
Thanks Bob

For your current setup it's too big. What DDP's are you planning on? The IV's will be plenty to get it lit off.

hx-40 with ddp IV

Thanks Wanna. I know with the stock injectors it will be a little light. I plan on going with a set of DDP IV. Now With those injectors and an HX-40 How drivable will this set up be? Am I going to always have to mash the peddle down to get the HX-40 to get lit off. I want to some what keep this thing in a decent MPG range. I havnt Noticed any 1st gens with a HX-40 in it. But I have driven a 97 with a HX-40 in it an it only had a some 370 injectors in it and it got about 16-18 mpg with an auto set up.

Driveability will depend on the turbine housing size on the HX-40 and your pump settings. With the injectors you plan on buying, an HX-40 set up for a Dodge pickup will be very good with the proper pump tuning.

Mileage on the highway will be about the same as it is now, expect to lose a couple MPG running in city traffic.

14wg

well it has a 14wg exh, housing on it. I think it will work good with my 47rh tranny upgrade. Has any one else put a HX-40 turbo on a 1st gen?

Yes, it will work great. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't out of the local truck junkyard.

There used to be several HX-40 equipped trucks, but the HX-40 has been displaced by the S300 based turbos because they are tougher and have a wider boost map.

I assume you are considering the HX-40 because it's a good deal?

good deal

Ya Wanna its a good deal. Plus it has a 14cm wg exh, housing on it. I was going to buy a HTT stg IV with a 14wg housing. But getting the HX-40-14 wg I will be saving 2/3 the amount I was planning to spend. I know that the hx-40's have had problems with lots power. I dont think I will be pushing it much. With the DDP's, and maybe a turn more on the full fuel screw, thats about it. So with the 47RH tranny upgrade, and the PS intercooler colecting dust in the shop, the HX-40 and the DDP's will work great, I hope.

? for Wanna

Hey Wanna,

Would a HTT IV/16 be a better set up with the DDP 4's than the HX-40. Or would the HX-40/14wg be a better set up. I figure the HX-40 will push more air. Or would the HTT be more efficient. Now I know that some people say a waste gated housing is better for a manual, and a non w/g housing is better for an auto trans. I am just thing witch would be better.
I am adding a fuel pin and the DDP injectors and my PS intercoolerm, and the the 47RH tranny. And thats about it for mods beside the turbo. And then maybe a turn or tow on the full fuel screw, So with that in mind what turbo would be a better pick.
Thanks Bob

Get the '40. A 14 cm '40 housing flows a lot more exhaust because the turbine is bigger.

The hx-40 should be limited to 40lb's of boost. The reason a 97 12v will drive one is because they can produce 350+ hp with just the addition of a fuel plate. It will be good for your truck as long as you can light it. wg housing is the way to go with any truck unless you have firering'd head with studs, then you can do what ever you want... What kind of boost are you seeing now??

Also for around $900 you can get the best of both worlds, a turbo that lights fast and stays lit throughout your rpm's the HX35 hot side molded with a hx40's compressor size.

The reason HX-40's are weak (if you go over 40 psi regularly) you might snap the shaft. The exhaust side of the 40 is so big it just twists the shaft. The Hybrid uses the smaller exhaust side with the 35 shaft with the 40 cold side (housing and wheel) the best set up for cheap with 330-400 hp is the hybrid with a 14wg housing. JMO

no deal

Well the deal fell through on the HX-40. The guy sold it from under me. O well. Another real good deal will come along. Right now I am more focused on my 47rh tranny upgrade, witch was shipped out today.

And I dont know what my boost is right now. WOT it max's out the 30psi gauge. I have it tuned real well for me.
