How hard is it really to rebuild an A518 auto tranny?? --If i have a rebuild manual and a complete rebuld kit? I am a fairly competant mechanic, 4 years of heavy equipment school and 2 years on tractor trailer mechanics. What in the way of special tools am i looking at?

You'll be OK. You will need some spring compressors for the clutch packs, but if you have a shop press and some scrap metal around you can come up with something that will work.

Off topic- I thought my old '85 was bad with 9 leaf packs!

Why excuse us, we all work on newer automatics and manuals, so A-518's aren't our main hobbies. Take it easy.

I'm preparing to do the same thing on my A-727 in a few weeks; here's the link to that thread.

get that manual it is cheap enough and we will go from there. every thing in my 727 is oem except valve body and kevlar bands. i am not sure one needs the kevlar but i had them so i used them. u will need a spring compressor to dissasemble the front clutch drum. feeler gauge and a dial indicater. snap ring pliers are a must. ps we need to talk off the board if u are going to try this. i am assuming that u have plenty of hand tools. dont buy any parts until u talk to me.

Well there are some critical areas to take measurements on, for spacers and such. The only clutch pack to worry about is the forward drum(3rd gear pack).
