how do you prime a dry fuel system

It's the VE motor I've rebuilt and am putting in my super duty.

It's running the second gen lift pump. I've put fuel in the filter and pumped away like a mad man on the primer, but nothing is happening. I'm guessing the line is dry right back to the tank.

Open the bleed screw and use a rag and a small amount of air pressure at the fuel tank.

Rotate/crank the engine a hair, then try pumping the primer again.

I'll try bumping the motor and trying again. I'm getting my brother to put the shopvac to the tank while I pump the primer. Still no go, but I'll bump the motor over a bit and see what happens.

GOT IT!

truck isn't injecting like I feel it should though... when I break the injector nuts loose it only oozes or squirts just a hair, it doesn't really squirt like it's supposed to. I'll try getting it to fire tomorrow though.

In the field I have used the exhaust from my truck to pressurize a fuel system. On my old work truck I installed a fitting on my smog pump to supply low pressure air for priming fuel systems, I was thinking about installing a fitting in the crossover to supply low pressure air from my turbo.

Make sure you do not have an air leak in the suction side of your fuel system, this will cause difficulty priming your system and aerate your fuel supply.

When I R&R&R my VE mine did what sounds like what you're describing the same thing.
I had my wires on wrong.
Make sure you have 12volts to the fuel shut off solenoid.

Open the bleeder, disable the grid heater, and give it a whiff of ether while you crank it, increase the ether til you have it idling, once you have fuel at the bleeder stop, close it, and do it again. Might want to put a little fuel in the IP first.

I know, I know, it's not good for the IP, but sometimes, nothing else works. I pressurized my tank, pumped the primer, pressurized my tank while pumping the primer, that was all I had left last winter when I got gelled up. And the 4B in the TD8 won't prime without the engine running.

I got it running and broken in. Just have to fix the nasty leak from the tappet cover.

Once I got fuel to the IP priming it wasn't too bad, other than trying to crank it with old batteries that have lost their charge and have been sitting for 5 months to boot.

Got newer batteries and primed and running.

I had my fuel screw in too far and once I got the idle up a bit to break it in, she just ran away on me. Got it shut down pretty quick but that was SCARY to have it happen on a completely fresh motor!
