Fuel System will not prime

A friend of mine was installing a fuel pressure gauge today in his 98.5 2500, truck ran fine before install. We installed a tapped banjo bolt in the fuel filter, after putting everything back together the truck would not restart, even after bumping the starter a few times. We cracked the banjo bolt coming into the fuel filter and turned the key on, the lift pump sounded like it was running but there was no fuel being pumped to the filter?? Is there something simple that we are looking over, or is the lift pump bad?? Any help would be great, considering the truck is not running.

clay try cracking fuel injector lines 1 and 3 at the fuel injectos, try to purge the air from the system.

If no fuel at the injector , the pump is dead.

If your not getting fuel into the filter cannister, then most likely the lift pump is indeed bad.
Especially if you heard it running, but it wasn't pumping anything.

Just make sure you have fuel in the tank , just had one towed in yesterday from a long ways away , and it was just out of fuel and had a aux tank with a pump in the bed with fuel ,

The fuel gauge reads 3/4 so I don’t think that is the problem, we called a local Cummins mech. and he said he thought the lift pump died, he ordered a new one to come in on Mon. hopefully that is all that is wrong. What are the odds that the VP44 has been damaged? Thanks for all of your responses, this is a very helpful site, I will keep you posted come Monday if it was the lift pump that went wrong.

Thanks Again,
Clay

If you cracked the injectors already, then disregard, but you don't really say you eliminated this. Any air has to escape, but air won't push the injectors open. Open 1,3, and 5 to get it started, then open 2,4 and 6 after closing the others, while it is running. If you took on adding a gauge, you probably know how to do this, but we can forget stuff in a jam.

We tried to crack the injectors with still no luck. So we took off the fuel line coming into the filter. We then bumped the starter and heard the pump running but there was no fuel even making it to the fuel filter. Once again thanks for all the helpful info.

Man, if you were closer to Surry, I would give you a lift pump I have to try. It only has about 3000 miles on it. I went to the FASS on my 99.

what is the suspected life span of a vp44 after the failure of the lift pump, does this depend on mileage, or how long the pump is running at any given time. For example is there a difference between 200 miles divided up into 20 10 mile trips or 200 miles in one trip on the life of the pump. hope this makes sense.

Installed new lift pump tonight, bumped the starter a few time and the truck fired right up. Lift pump install was a snap and fuel pressure after install read 16 idle, 13-14 cruising, and 11 WOT. Hopefully we caught it soon enough so it didn’t hurt the VP44. Thanks for all the help guys this is a great site for do it yourself kind of people.

Thanks
Clay
