How do identify rearend? NEED HELP PLEASE

I have a 1993 D350. It has 4.10 gears but I want to go back to the original 3.54's. The tag is gone off my rearend all I know is it IS A DANA. Any tips on how to determine which Dana?

If it is the original rearend to a diesel 1st gen, it is a Dana 70. There may be a 70 cast on one of the cast gusset braces on the rear center housing. There also should be a number stamped into the right axle tube.

I'm curious too, seems I've read everything from D60 - D80. I was putting new shoes and drums on the back on my D250 and the Napa Auto counter said D60. Mine had the 3" shoes and 6.29" tall drums but I also know it left the factory with a 3.54 but now has a 4.10 as set up in the mid-1990's for 5th wheel towing.

I believe ALL 1st gen Dodge Diesel trucks had Dana 70 rear axles, even the duallies [with the exception of the 3.07 geared Dana 71 rears used on the '89-'91 auto trucks mostly].

The 1st gen GAS D / W-250s had the Dana 60 rear axles

Dodge started using Dana 80 axles with the new body style in '94 only on the manual shifted 2500s, and all the 3500 trucks.

Check under the hood for the factory sticker that list your paint codes and drivetrain options.
It is located roughly above the battery on the bottom of the hood.

That works if your axle wasn't switched out in the last 20 years, as mine was. My original axle was replaced with another 70 from a 93 out of a boneyard back some 10 years ago. I found the numbers on the RG to provide to the supply house and order a clutch kit for the trac loc... Bob's thread has the links

This is what I have always found to be true too.

How do identify rearend? NEED HELP PLEASE

Well, after a few days, it finally hit me what he was asking.....

How do identify rearend? NEED HELP PLEASE

There are "large rear ends" and "small rear ends" and "just right rear ends". This theory is very similar to Goldilocks and the Three bears. One rear end is large enough to hurt you, the other one is so small that you laugh at it when you're threatened by it's presence, and finally the "just right" rear end makes you all weak and tingly inside your gut, as you just want to hang out and watch as it passes by.....

Hope this helps.....
