How To Advance VE Pump Timing

I had a diesel repair expert took at my truck & I asked him if it looked & sounded ok. He said he thinks the pump timing is too retarded. The alignment marks are in-line, but I want to advance it. He said not to do this while its running like a gas engine. My question is: which way do I turn the pump to advance? Any suggestions on how much to turn it? I am guessing about 1/8" increments until things sound optimum. Would this be correct? Thanks for any replies.

True, motor should be off. Mainly because it is a PITA to get to the bolts. Loosen the 3 bolts around the injector pump (back one is really hard to get to). Loosen the bolt that goes to the bracket in the back of the pump. Then just rotate pump clockwise if you were facing the radiator. I had to reach from underneath it and yank on it rather well to turn mine clockwise or upwards towards the top of the motor. It does only move about 1/8" at the most or so. You may also need to loosen the line coming off the back, not sure of it's name right now. It may help loosening the injector lines also, but then you will need to bled off the air afterwards. Mine didn't need that to be done.

Good luck, a curved box end wrench may help with back bolt.

Er, motor should be off because the torque required to drive an injector pump is enough to do damage with the bolts loose . . .

It's much easier to move the pump if you disconnect the AFC tube (the one that goes from the mainfold to the top of the pump).

The best tool I've found for the bottom nut is an "S" shaped wrench from Harbor Freight. Comes as a set for $10. The top one can be reached from the back with a long 1/4 extension, the rest are easy.
