Where are you gonna get em for $200? I just paid $301.54 for them delivered from SnapOn with the turning tool.

You gotta piece it together.. Not as nice as the snap-on one but still works I guess.

Dial indicator
Oil drain plug
DV Socket
Barring tool
Gear puller

Yes in the cover. It's much more involved than turning the distributor cap on "old" gassers.

$500!?!?!? Timing should only be about 1-2 hour job, setting the valves should take less than an hour.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Get the tools, and its free timing changes from then on out. You can do others timing if you like and make money off those tools. Its really not a hard procedure by any means. But I'm an advocate of not paying someone else to do a job that I can do myself.

Guess it all depends on how many times you might change yours or others timing if investing in the tools is worth it or you're better off having someone else do it.

Watch out though if you have someone else do it, many mechanics will say they know how but really don't have a clue.
Ask how they do it, if the words dial indicator aren't in their explanation go elsewhere.

Wow. The tools weren't worth it to me for the times I planned on doing it. 200 for timing and valves is steep, but kinda fair. I got lucky and had my timing done yesterday for 50 plus a 10 dollar tip. The guy does 2 or 3 a week and I love what it did to the truck.

Was I reading you right CSA that you bought the tools then decided against doing it? Let me know if you put them in the classifieds.

301 with an engine barring tool : yikes. We know snap on is pricey though.

3-3.5 hours at $95/hour plus seals, gaskets and "shop" supplies. Sounds about right to me.

I called one of the more popular diesel shops in my town and they quoted me about $300, but then proceded to tell me that they didn't have the "specialized tools" and that they just do it by their experience. Haha. No thanks, I've got the tools coming.

Good call scjfly.

@ Lil Dog : valve cover gaskets are a yes, but what brand has a nice silicone rubber type that seals well and lasts a while?

Also, what seal? Are you supposed replace the seal between the oil fill tube and timing comer when you change the timing?
