Help with flatbed info

Hey ya'll......I'm looking to buy and install a flatbed with an inset gooseneck hitch on my 1992 d350 club cab dually. I have a few questions.

What do I need to look for in size and build ? What works for you all

Do certain 2nd or 3rd gen Dodge ram flatbeds work ?

Any other makes such as Ford or Chevy flatbeds bolt up or not ?

Thanks !

If you are buying a used flat, just about no matter what, you are going to have to do some torching and welding.

So far as how much, that is a hard call to make, as there are too many variables.

You can build cheaper than you can re-work.

Most new flatbeds are pretty universal, as in you build your own mounts to mount it to your frame. I have mounted several and they all are little different depending on the truck. One thing you need to watch for is difference in frame widths under the flatbed, just as an example 89-02 dodges have a 38'' frame width and the 03-present have a 42'' frame width. You will not find a used bed that will just bolt up unless you found one that was already on a first gen and somebody has already built the mounts. The second gens and first gens I have put flatbeds on are completely different on mounting. I can't help ya much on fords or chevy's. Not sure who would want one of them anyways good luck and feel free to pm me with questions.

I have five trucks, all five have flatbeds. I'll tell ya right now that flatbeds are not biased to the brand of your truck. The first thing underneath the actual deck is a bunch of crossmembers, then comes the rails that sit above your frame. They are easily moved to whatever width you want. I just sold a flatbed off a 77 Ford that I totaled to a guy that had it on an 07 Chevy within a couple days. When I'm in the market for a flatbed I look at length width, and height/style of headache rack. The rest is easy. Once ya go flat, ya never go back. Good luck man.

I used a flat bed off a 70s Ford on my M880. Rail width matched. I had to move the fuel door and add a crossmember under the front and obviously all the mounting hardware but other than that it was fairly simple.

One other issue is whether the bed came off a SRW, duelly or a cab chassis model. Both of the latter have 6 wheels but the axle width is different. Not sure if beds only come in two widths or not?

I had a '96 Chevy 2500 flatbed that I used more than my D250. It had that stupid-a** fuel pump in the tank that failed once per year so I sold it after fuel pump No.3... I kick myself every time I drive my Dodge for not keeping that 8'6" long flat bed off of it. You can haul a pile of 2x12x16's or a 20' culvert like no big deal. Do that with your 8' bed… dag… I'm headed to Craigslist right now to look for one… H

Years ago, I often drove my employer's '86 Chevy C30 dually C&C flatbed. It was approx the same width as the cab and covered the rear duals. Headache rack, small cable-winch crane on the back corner (removable). It was a 7' cab/axle and the deck stopped at the rear spring hangers. made for about a 9-10' deck. It could have been longer, but was a small compromise to counter the cantilever load of the wrecker wheel-lift

Our trucks will take a 9' long deck easy enough because the axle is biased a bit rearward on the pickup box..
