HELP- Died and won't start.....
Hi, I haven't been on here in a while with a question but I have a 92-ish 6BT on an irrigation well and pivot that came out of a Dodge pickup. It has been running well but when I checked it tonight the RPMs had slowed a little and I thought the throttle may have moved. I adjusted it fine and just a couple of moments later it died just like you hit the kill switch. It would not start.
I got a new fuel filter and put it on an hour later and still nothing. I checked for 12V at the inj. pump too. I bled the injectors and they squirted fuel fine. I sprayed some WD-40 into the turbo intake and a little smoke came out of the exhaust but it doesn't even try to start.
Do you have any ideas of where to look and what to check? Have to get it going as quickly as I can. I do have some parts trucks to rob parts from.

I'm using the stock fuel solenoid for my shutoff. It does not smoke at all when the starter is turning it.
If it is the gov, can it be fixed on the engine or do I need to pull the pump off?

It can be fixed on the engine.. but usually if you hold the injector pump open it should start. Unless the spring busted then you might have a bigger issue.
As you know it takes air fuel and ignition ( compression ) to run an engine and you lost one of them. Since you said it shut down like you turned off the key I would pull the fuel solenoid out a check that first. There is a whole section somewhere on here about the fuel solenoid. Just my two cents, Mike.

i would doubt its the gov, I would bet money the fss failed, take it out, there will be a plunger and a spring, remove the plunger and spring and reinstall the fss with out the plunger and try starting it. then use the manual kill lever on the side of the pump.
ps you will more than likely have to use a hammer and chisel to remove it couple good taps and it will spin loose.

maybe the air filter is clogged
I had the index a hair off on a pump and it wouldn't even start. I think the nut vibrated loose? After getting it to start at WOT I moved the index over a whisker and it fired right up. So many things it could be though. GL!

Good news! I had a service tech come out to help because the way my luck is on the farm this year----I knew the pump would be coming off!
We gave it a whif of either and it came to life but did not stay running, took an injector line clear off and it had a little fuel, but not enough to run. Lift pump was working. Took off a bracket to get to the FSS and it was tight as usual to turn it. The plunger looks perfect but the o-ring inside looked bad. Put it in without the plunger parts and it fired right up.
I had a new FSS on hand and we put it in and all back together and it is running fine.
Could the bad o-ring let fuel leak where the spring is and not let it open all of the way?
I'm glad I did not have to pull a good pump from another engine to get going as getting mine rebuilt would have taken a week or more. Everyone is very busy right now.
Thanks for all of the help here!!!! Now I need to find where I ordered the cheap VW FSS and get another one on the shelf.
On another note, my Duetz locked up after decades of good service and I just yesterday put a p-pump 1994 on another well. When the truck wears out, keep the Cummins spinning!
When I took these pics, I still needed to add fuel lines and a power shaft cover. Safety first....

Power units running unattended 24/7 usually have Murphy switches to shut them off for multiple things like oil level, oil pressure, temp, water level, etc. so I need the FSS for the automatic kill switch if something goes wrong. The Murphy is also tied into a center pivot if you have one to shut off the engine if something goes wrong with the pivot.
