GetragS shifter O-fill procedure

OK, im cheap. I dont want to have to run to town AGAIN today to BUY another part for my truck. And I see there is no deffinative procedure listed to pull the shifter, overfill, and reinstall.

SO, what is the procedure to pull the shifter? Im not feeling adventurous, its cold outside.

Well you have to pull up the big shifter boot and then loosen the clamp to lift the smaller boot up. Then get a set of snap ring pliers and remove the 2" snap ring. Then the shifter should pop out. Pour in oil to your hearts content then find somebody to hold the shifter down while you put the snap ring back in. I'll assume you don't need to be told how to replace the boots.

Another trick is put a small elbow into the filler hole and tilt to where you can fill to about an inch higher, then cap it. I'm not pulling my shifter again if I can help it as the way I reinstalled it took two men and a goat to hold things down to tighten those mickey mouse little screws and monster circlip. Not a tough procedure, just hard work.

I just put a street elbow on mine out of the fill plug. I need to put on about a 3inch piece at a 45 degree angle because with the street elbow I only can get about 4 quarts or so in. I also ran a 1/2 inch clear hose up to the engine bay with a funnel so its easy to fill. when I'm done filling and take off the hose and plug it. Needs a little work but it makes it easy.

Why not install a hose-barb in the street-ell, clamp the clear hose to that, and add a barb with cap at the top end, making the hose a permanent part of the equation??

You could dump in five quarts and mark FULL on the clear hose; or, turn the elbow almost level, dump in four quarts, mark "ADD ONE QUART", then dump in the fifth quart and mark FULL.

I was just thinking of the easy route with a 4-5quart container. Its roomy being 2 wheel drive, but not roomy enough to fit a big jug under there. I want to fabricate some sort of dipstick, that'd be cool. I'm sure I'll come up with something. Thanks guys!
