Getrag questions

Well, so far, so good on my getrag rebuild from last January. It has stood up to 30k miles and hasn't come apart yet My question concerns the popping out of 5th. It only does it under deceleration, ie coasting downhill. The 5-R syncro is new, including small parts. I suspect the toploader, but don't know much about them. I'm about one extention cord away from cutting the floor up and trying my spare. Should I? There must be some kind of ball/spring action going on in the toploader to help hold it in gear---anyone ever have one apart? I see no reason to tear into the tranny at this point since it's holding my meek power and shifting ok, but I'd really like to be able to coast downhill w/out holding it in 5th Thoughts?

Greg,

Normally when I have had transmissions jump out of gear, it is because of some alignment or wear problem, not the shift cover. The gear should not be rubbing that hard on the fork during normal operation -- otherwise it will wear the fork out. The exception to this is if the transmission is not going fully into gear because of something wrong with the rails, forks, etc.

Gee, that really wasn't any help, eh?

Don't cut the floor unless you have another tunnel to cut the patch panel out of.

Just to add some information, when it pops out, it feels like it was barely in gear, when compared to how the other gears feel while shifting. I'm wondering if the fork got wore out before I built the tranny, since the bearings and all were pretty trashed when it came apart..maybe the fork wear was caused by that? Anyway, my parts truck has a good floor, so I can cut and splice as I need

Just put a hindge on it after you cut it out! Just kidding.

My truck dus the same only it pops out of 5th when i'm going down heal w/ex-brake on! With just a little pressure on the shifter(basicly taking the waight of the shifter, off from it) it will stay in.

My ? to you, (G1625S) sence you have had a getrag a part,....is there a ball and spring, in 5th gear/shaft that is external to the tranny thay you could take a bolt out of and add a small washer or something to add a little more spring tention to 5th gear detent?

edit Sorry just read you post a little close thats why you want to cut a hole in you flour pan

Have checked to see if the rubber shifter boot is dry rotted? This is what happens on My dads 93' the dry shifter boot will make the tranny pop out of 5th if you push the accelarator just right

I can't offer any constructive information on your transmission problem; but, I can offer a little tip if you cut out your floor.

My old 78 Chevy has a center-panel in the floorboard that is huge and made to take out by removing a few bolts on each side of it.

If you do cut the floor, do so in such a way that you can make a removable/replaceable panel out of it.

I know it sure makes life a lot easier when working on the old Chevy.

Can't help, but here is some pics of my getrag 'access door'. http://www.turbodieselregister.com/u...0&albumid=1315. Makes easy tightening of the top two bell to engine bolts. Previous owner made it to where it uses screws to attach to the floor.

Well, just make sure that you paint the edges of the hole before you put it all back together. It will be a good excuse to add some extra sound-proofing to the floor, too.

It sounds to me as though you have a shift for alignment problem . . .
