getrag question
I have 93 ctd 4x4 with getrag currently out of it, shift fork troubles, got that fixed but decided to put bearings in it while it's out of the truck. Glad I did, they look pretty ratty, truck has 175k on it. We got the input and main shafts out but cannot get the counter shaft out. It does not use needle rollers inside the counter shaft gears it uses a tapered roller on each end of the shaft that goes through the gear. Could I get someone with a FSM or tranny tech manual to tell me whether the shaft presses out of the countergears or not. I asked this question on pirate board and moparts and John Kunkel of moparts gave me this board address.
Re:getrag question
Here goes:
1. Remove countershaft front bearing cap from caseby striking it with a punch to unseat it. Be careful as bearing could be damaged if punch penetrates cap and contacts bearing.
2. Remove the snap ring and bearing race. If race proves difficult to remove, use a slide hammer and blind puller tool or remove rear bearing snap ring and drive countershaft and bearing out of the case.
This is paraphrased out of my '93 FSM. Basically it sounds like the thing to do is get a BFH and pound that sucker out of there! Happy pounding.

Re:getrag question
I already had the cap and snap rings front and back out, just wasn't sure if there was some kind of trick retainer for the shaft or if it was a light press. thanks. I have an nv5600 I had been mulling over installing in this truck but really want to buy a 94 or 95 to put it in. The 93 is a rough but rust free truck.

Re:getrag question
I used a brass drift and the shaft knocked right out of the counter gears with a hammer. Was pleasently supprized by price of seal and bearing kit, national quoted me about 85$ and it's enroute. A few years ago a guy at work paid almost 300$ for one bearing for the getrag, I think it was the one between the input and main shafts.
Re:getrag question
I have a copy of the Getrag service manual in my computer. IM me your Email address and I will send it to you. Also be very carefull of the countershaft front plug seal (dont damage it) I could not find one seperate from a kit. The cheapest kit I could find was $1100.00. I was able to purchase all the bearings (tapered rollers) for $100.00. and repair the damage I did to the seal so I lucked out.

Re:getrag question
I received the copy of getrag section this morning, thanks winr, I needed the preload specs to finish this thing up. On a very slow dial up, took some time to download. Small rural phone company, the only modem that will even work is external, lucky if i hook up at 41K.
