My '93 FSM says preload should be 6 to 8 thousandths for both shafts. Heck, you got it apart, you got the specs, you don' need no steenking manual!

Sounds good to me!!!

I had a little trouble with the last bearing race so I got out my trust grinder and .... it sure made some neat sparks. All is ready to reassemble.

I have heard that you want to go back with the bronze pilot bushing as its wear rate is alot better than the needle type.

My old volvo's used needle bearings. Sometimes when they went they jammed and you went through hell trying to extract the pilot shaft. I bought a bronze one to replace the bronze on that is in it.

Any good ideas for extraction? I suppose I will have to pull the bell housing and the clutch. Good time to look for problems there, although the clutch performs well as long as I don't try to get too fancy.

I guess that the bushing will come out fairly easy. I have found a bolt which is the same diameter, put grease in the hole and hammered the bolt in which shot the bearing out. I have also used a custom bent screwdriver and a smaller bolt to make a puller. I have even used a broken hack-saw blade to cut a couple of slots and make the bushing fall apart.

ARRRGHHHHH!!!!

NAPA supplied the wrong pilot shaft bearing AND the wrong Driveshaft hanger bearing.

THe old pilot shaft bearing looked very healthy and new so I left it in. The transmission I put in by myself so there was an hour of push pull, cuss etc but it went in fine when I got it all lined up properly. No problem with the shifter circlip. Looks kind of pretty down there.

She works!
Shifts very smoothly and has a solid feel. A little low rpm rumble in 4th but better than before and all other gears are quite smooth.

No leaks....

We'll see how she works when I pull the 5th wheel to Minnesota in a couple of days.

UPDATE

Pulled the 5th wheel to Minnesota. 4th gear no longer vibrates. I guess the new pilot shaft bearing had to seat in to the pilot shaft. I was a little concerned because this was the only bearing that can't have a new seat. It is much quieter in all gears and really quite tight. There are no leaks and I guess I have to declare the fix a real success.
