Getrag Overfill Writeup???

Anyone able to offer some helpfull hints on filling the getrag from the topside? Theres an awesome writeup in the sticky's about doing the fabbed up site glass and filling it from the side but im more of the kind that will do a little extra wrenchin just to make the filling process go a little quicker. Just wonderin if theres already a post that you guys know of or if someone might offer a lil step by step guidance. I was looking through one of the post I want to say I remember it saying something about having to remove a snap right or something and thats a first for me at needin snap ring pliers to take a shifter off and fill a 5spd. thanks ahead of time guys

Leave the shifter alone.

Put in a street-ell where the fill-plug is.

Cut a hole in the floor.

Poke a length of pipe through the hole in the floor and screw it into the street-ell.

Weld a dip-stick in a hole that you drilled in a pipe-cap.

Now, your girlfriend can check the level and add fluid from the comfort and convenience of the cab, without you having to dirty up your suit.

Honestly Id rather not cut any holes in the floor, but thanks for the suggestion. Id rather just get an idea if I need any special tools for the job and fill from the shifter. Thanks

i think its much easier to do take the shifter off and fill it through there it takes more time to put in the fluid than to take it apart and put it togather, and snap ring pliers are cheap even for good sets and you should have a set anyway.

My main concern about the various quick/easy get-r-done methods of over-fill is the inability of actually being able to get an accurate read of just how much fluid is still in there.

Before every long haul, I like to check and KNOW that I still have five-quarts.

With the extra quart-and-a-half in there, one can no longer remove the fill-plug and stick a finger in to determine the level.

Whatever method of pouring the stuff in is used, some ACCURATE means of checking the level needs be devised.

Over fill it thru the top PTO cover bolt. Then grab a metal coat hanger and cut a lanth off from it. Poke it in the hole and bend the top so it going straight now into the oil. Remove newly made dip stick and mark the full level on it.

I used a hack saw to scratch the full mark clean it up with brake cleaner (so the pain would stick) and made a red paint mark across the previous scribed make. now it vary easy to check and see.

when done install the top PTO bolt. I have my dip stick slid in the frame rail, held in place by the the wiring looms support bracket, so its easy to use when i want to check it the next time.

The hole is 1/2"NPT.

I found a 1/2M X 3/4F street-ell that stepped the business end up to 3/4, which makes it much easier/quicker to pour through.
