Getrag issue

Well now my gutbag has a new problem. It shifts fine in town but once you hit the highway and get into 5th gear it doesn't like to come out of 5th. You have to come to a complete stop and fight with it and usually after the 6th or 7th try you can get it into 4th then from there it is fine again until you hit 5th. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Try holding the stick to the right as you pull it into neutral then let it spring back to center and then pull it down into 4th. Your shifter is worn such that it doesn't pull the fork completely out of 5th before it disengeges from the fork rod. Then it's locked because the rest of the shifter won't allow it to be in 2 gears at the same time.

Mine does the same thing and once when a mechanic had to move the truck he got it locked in 1st.

The cure of course is to get the shifter fixed but I'd just got in the habit of holding the shifter over until I'm sure it out of 5th before I try for 4th. It's a PITA at first but I got used to it. I'll get the gutbag overhauled someday but not yet.

I wish mine were that simple. I filled it with 5 qts of Mobil 1 synthetic.
