Getrag Shifter Issue
Getrag Shifter Issue
I have a newly rebuilt (less than 2000 miles) getrag in my D350. Truck is stock in the power department. Anywho, the other day while shifting into reverse, the shifter went all the way to the bench seat. Like hitting it. I was able to get it to go back into a forward gear but not back in to reverse. Basically 5th and reverse were all jacked up. When going into 5th the shifter hits the dash.
Fast forward to yesterday. The tranmission is now stuck in reverse and I cant get the shifter back into the pattern to shift out of it. I took off the boots, removed the shifter, and aligned the shift rails back in to neutral with a large screwdriver. I then re-installed the shifter. All seemed well until I tried to put it back into reverse. The shifter would once again leave the pattern and not allow me to place it back in. In other words I couldn't find a gear to shift in to. The end of the shifter is not outside of the "H" and thus wont let me shift into any gears.
I searched and couldnt find a situation similar to mine. What could my problem be? Bend shift fork/rail? The shifter itself is in good condition. Any issue with the set screws on each side of the shifter base? The shifter is defintely not as tight as it felt previous to the issue.
I am at a loss here and need to get my truck back on the road.
Thanks--Alex

My best guess is that you need an entire new shift mechanism.
Failure as you described is more common than you would think.
My cousin had the top off of his dozens of times before an entire new top-end finally cured the problem.
The names of the companies do not jump right into my head at the present; but there are two companies that did have these units in stock, Blumenthol or somesuch and Standard Transmission in TEXAS (I think).
I may be way off on those two names.
I know that isn't what you wanted to know, but I hope it helps.

Just had this happen to me, if you push the roll pin all the way in... it locks up the forks. There is a roll pin that hangs out a little bit (1/4 inch). I'm thinking that your tranny guy might have hammered that in and now it's locking up the system. Either way you'll have to take the top off the transmission.
