Yesir i think the bottom shaft in the trans. moved back about 3/8" and that why it drilled the hole in the tailhousing i think maybe a retaining ring might have come off the other end. I thought maybe a print would show me if there is a retaining ring bfore i pull it apart thanks for the reply.

According to the diagram at ALLDATADIY.COM there is a roller bearing and C-ring at each end of the countershaft. Email me and I'll see if I can copy the diagrams for you. They're kind of crude however.

The snap ring is under a cover that is blocked by the bellhousing. The trans will have to come out. On the picture that Edwin found, you can see the groove for the snap ring all the way at the front of the countershaft.

well, my paperwork is still at the shop where I built the tranny, but those pics on drivetrain.com are part of that manual. C Pierce, so, shaft #29 is pushing out the back of the tranny? You won't see it through the inspection cover becase it goes through gear #27. The manual I have (somewhere) says that neither the shaft nor the gear are serviceable and have to be replaced as a unit. From experience I know that the shaft is a very tight fit in there...I had to beat the you know what out of it to get it out of that long gear. My point is that something must have gone quite wrong if the shaft pulled backward so hard that it snapped that snapring on the front and began to pull away from the bearing and through the gear and then out through the tailshaft....

anyway, it's late and I'm no longer making any sense. sounds like some getrag surgery is in your future, unfortunately. at the very least, that front snapring is covered by a plug in the front of the housing--which also happens to be mated flush to the bellhousing
