I think they got a bad rap myself. They are by no means perfect, but for a DD and medium towing they are fine I think. At one time the parts were expensive and hard to find, but the aftermarket has started making parts now.
Mine has 210K on it and I will be doing a rebuild soon. The only place I found that would tell me the brand of their bearings was Standard trans in Fort worth, TX. They had Timken.

Mine only has 138k on it, and The previous owner replaced the fluid at 18,000 as the manual states for severe service-even had it highlighted. Problem is he used 3.5 qts.
I refilled with Synthetic oil, and used a full 5qts. It doesnt shift like a Sports car, sometimes it has trouble going into reverse super quick, but all in all Im not afraid of mine, and ive put some weight behind it.
I dont think its a horrible trans

Mine has *** bearings in it. Seriously, that's the company name. They're German, they must not know what it means in English.
Standard Trans is a good place to deal with. I won't recommend the place I got mine because they shorted me a bearing.
edit: Oops, I see the name of the German bearing company is verboten.

I've got cheapo bearings in mine. I built it myself on some plywood in a garage w/a dirt floor. Filled it with 5 qts of a good quality 5-30 full synthetic and have been driving with my foot to the floor in every gear for 15,000 miles---no problems. The key with the Getrag (IMO) is not to hurry it. Once you're in a gear, let 'er rip, but on the way to that gear, you just gotta let those syncros get there on their own schedule or you're asking for trouble---once you've had them (the syncros) apart, it's easy to see how lame they are, especially the 1-2. I even had a couple rollers fall out of the 5th gear bearing. Just slapped them back in with some manual tranny assembly goo and put the gear on. I've done a dozen 45-90 5th gear roll-ons just today! Most I've had behind it is the 5er in my gallery, prolly 11k. Sure wished it was a 6speed then!

while evacuating from rita I towed my beloved 92 250 rwd behind my van in nuetral and somewhere down line broke something in my tranny . well to cut the sob story short I would like to rebuild it myself .. Typically when I drove it I would startin 2nd so when I gotin it I put it in 2nd and letoff the clutch and the stickpopped forward slapping my hand and the truck killed I put the truck in nuetral and let off the clutch and the truck killed. I disconnected the drive shaft and the shaft coming out of tranny had a wobblein it. so what do you think ? Is there any hope and can I rebuild it with zero trans expierience? Thanks in advance

Dingo, you probably trashed the bearing that goes between the input and output shafts at the very least. When you flat tow a truck with the trans in neutral, the countershaft doesn't rotate to splash oil up into the top of the trans. If you gotta flat tow, you need to disconnect the driveshaft.

The Getrag is a pretty good trans. I believe the factory berings are KOYO. There are some things that dont make sense, like the small bering on the counter shaft and using a taper bering instead of a straight cut isnt my first choice. When I was hauling commercially I use 50 wt synthetic gear oil and it worked marvelous, it was just a bit stiff on cold days until it warmed. One of the bigger problems was heat from towing. I put a cooler on mine and its helped alot. I have a F250 company truck with a 6spd and I see Ford uses a mechanical oil pump and cooler on it, might be something to check into..
