Gears and rears
Gears and rears
Ok , so I picked up a 14 bolt chevy 1 ton rear for cheap ( free) Its got 4.10 gears, 10.5" ring gear, 13" brakes and the axle tubes dewarf the ones on my dana 60. Thats right I want to swap it in my truck. I even lucked out, the axle perches are in the right spot. Here is my problem, I currently am running 4.56 gears, so should I swap the front for 4.10s or swap the ones in the new axle for 4.56s. What are you guys thoughts. I dont tow over about 6000#, mabe 10k once every few years. Are any of you running 4.10s with big tires, or mabey 35" tires with 3.73s, if so do you like it? I see a lot of threads where people want to put in taller gears, is this just for mileage? I think the cummins has enough torque to pull ether of these. What do you guyes think?
Its a toss up, I dont want to loose any power , but I wander if it would be faster with the 4.10s, Right now I dont have any sort of speed till I get into 4th gear , befor that I am like a tractor trailer . Iam usaly in 5th by 50mph if I am just crusing around town, even in the 45 zones Iam usaly in 5th gear, but it also has no problem cruzing at 75 on the highway, it tops out about 90mph.
The carrier break on the GM 14 bolt 10.5 is 4.10, so if you want to go 4.56 you'll have to swap carriers or get a custom set of 4.56 gears cut to mount on the 4.10 and 3.73 carrier.
My dads 69 GMC 3/4 4x4 has 5.14 gears, detroit locker, 427, 4 speed, rockwell 221 gear drive transfer case. SCREAMS at 55 with 33" tires. I think even with the overdrive you might figure your rpm at 60 mph with a online calculator to make sure the engine isn't revving too hard.

Yea, I am leaning tward the 4.10s, I guess I could just install it with the 4.10s, and try it out, If I like it then swap out the front, if not then I will get the 4.56 for the 14 bolt, I think they make a set of 4.56 gears for the 14bolt that come with an extra thick ring gear so you can use the 4.10 carrier. I guess that is better than the ring gear spacer I am running in the dana 60...
