Gasser fuel tank ready for diesel?
Gasser fuel tank ready for diesel?
Might be a stupid question, but are there any mods needed to run diesel in the gasser tank. Only reason I ask is that I think I read about removing the filter "sock" from the pickup. Has anyone else heard this, and is there anything else. How about the fuel lines themselves, are they the same diameter?
When I did my swap I ran the gas down to about 2-3 gallons in a 36 gal tank, topped it off with #2, been driving ever since with zero problems. The line size should be the same but the lines on the gasser run down the pass side frame rail so you will need to switch sides. I just dropped the hard lines down and ran extensions across under the engine crossmember.
Dump all the gas out and either use your old diesel pickup assembly or take the sock off the gasser pickup. You will need to run a suction strainer if you use the "barefoot" gasser pickup. Fuel lines are the same. '92 and up use plastic lines.
fuel system
Here is how I plan to plumb a fuel system in my 85 crew cab using the stock gasser tank. This would be the time to build a 1/2" fuel system. Supply: -8an (1/2" ID) bulkhead fitting. Drill hole in top of fuel tank. Run -8an fuel hose to bottom of tank, attached to the bottom of the bulkhead fitting at top tank. Run -8an fuel hose to a -8an inline fuel filter say 100 micron, secure filter to frame rail somewhere. -8an fuel hose from filter outlet to your supply/transfer pump (with correct adaptor fitting) (1/4npt). Cover fuel hose with old 5/8" heater hose or something suitable at points of contact/rubbing with anything. Parker or Aeroquip fuel hose, found at any good hose, fitting, hydraulic shop or online. I found my Aeroquip 'pushlok' type hose locally at a hose and bearing shop.
Plug any unused port on top of your diesel or old gasser fuel tank. I would run stock sized rubber hose for your return line. Plumb it into one of the fittings on top the removeable piece in the fuel tank.

My aux. tank was out of an 89 Ramcharger. Inside the fuel pick-up assy, I used the steel line that is curled all around the pick-up assy, for my suction side. It is about an inch or so from the bottom, so it hopefully wont pickup any debris, if any ever gets in there.
