Thank you TC

Those threads answered a lot of questions.

Now I have a question I got the 3.08 gears in my axles with the Getrag I basicly have no granny gear and a very fast reverse (I put transfer in to low for when really needed) and no need for 5th below 70mph

With the the G56 will I have a lower 1st and slower reverse than I have now? I'm think yes

I'm not real good at reading this gear chart

Gear G-56 AD G-56 AE G-360 (5 Spd.) NV 4500
1 6.29 5.94 5.53 5.61
2 3.48 3.28 3.02 3.04
3 2.10 1.98 1.60 1.67
4 1.38 1.31 1.00 1.00
5 1.00 1.00 0.77 0.73
6 0.79 0.74 N/A N/A
Rev 6.29 5.42 5.03 5.61 or 5.04
O/D-F/D Ratio@ 3.54 R/A
2.89 2.62 2.73 2.58

Yes the G56 will have a slower gear for 1st and Reverse,

G56 AD = 6.29,
G56 AE = 5.94
Getrag (G360) = 5.53.

Read them as a gear ratio...higher the number, slower the movement.

I think it's a typo for the G360 on that chart...but generally the 1st and reverse are the same gear ratio.

When your looking at a G56 on the ID plate under model it says G56. If it has a -x with the X being a number. that is the early .79 OD trans. If it says G56-R its a later trans with the .74 OD and high geared 1st and reverse.

Find a -X model. That .74 OD is just about to high.

The only difference between 2WD and $X$ is the bolted on drive shaft adapter flange. Unbolt it and the 205 bolts right on.

Thanks Philip i did read your thread with a fine tooth comb and came to the conclusion that I will be needing the older AD 05-07.5 G-56 lower geared.

Unfortunately the G-56 I found at a fair price is advertised as a 08 but that's not stopping me to look at it and see if it has the X.

The X I mentioned is in the line that says model G56 then a dash with a number. The X means a number its normly a 6. I have seen one with a 4..

Of the G56's I have the one in my truck is a -6 model. A core G56 I have is a -6 and the other one is a -R. Those two have been checked by tooth count. The other good one I have is a -R. That one I haven't checked.

Running 60 MPH with the -R trans would put you right at 1500 to 1550 RPM. With a -6 trans you would be at 1650 with 235 tires.

If the price is right on that -R trans you still might think about it. 60 MPH in 5th is only 2K rpm. You wouldn't use OD with that .74 OD till 60 MPH or so. If you tow heavy that 5.9 1st might blow some. The deeper 6.8 gearing is nice rolling a heavy load off. Same with the deep reverse.

Got fully understood

G56-6 or 4 = low geared

G56-R = high geared

Thank you

Honestly, I couldn't complain about any of those G56 ratios.... Ford's diesel ZF had 4.xx 1st and reverse. Low-range was a must for trailer jockeying.

They both look better than the Getrag too.

There is a local guy who is selling one from a 08? I believe. But he says when he drained the oil it was metallic looking in colour. So had it replaced under warranty. Says it shifted fine, with no un-usual noises. Any ideas what might be wrong with it?

Excessive end play in the gear train I bet. Loose end play from bearing wear and it lost its preload.

Usuable, re-buildable, or junk?
