fuel tanks

I am doing a cummins conversion in a 73 crewcab. I took out the in cab gas tank and put 2 ramcharger gas tanks between the frame rails out back. What would I have to do to convert these to be used for diesel? Both tanks are out of a early 80s truck so they are not fuel injected tanks. Would I need to add an extra fuel pump near the tanks to push the fuel up to the engine? Maybe a holley blue pump? What size fuel line would I need too? I was thinking of converting the stock lift pump to the piston pump like in the sticky.

As far as I know, there is no difference in gas versus diesel tanks.

I would pour some gas in them, slosh it around real good, dump it, and bolt them in.

Before mounting, I would inspect the vent provisions and vent them remotely, high and dry, independent of the filler-neck, unless you like fuel puked out in your boots.

If you are using two tanks, you will need tank selector valves to switch draw and return from whichever tank you prefer.


I use manual valves for tank switching; I have had numerous failures with the various electric valves; in my opinion, they are all user-friendly junk.

BK, what brand/model valves do you use? I currently have a "6way Pollack" plumbed between the OEM tank & 80gal bed tank and am looking to turn that into a manual operation with the same functionality.

Here is where I got mine.

I use genuine WeatherHead brand, which is what they sell; no plastic ball for me, only stainless steel or the like.

Seeing as I have three tanks, I use the four-way, 6747 I think it is.


Remember, it takes TWO, one for draw and the other for return.

I have a sack full of manual valves that switch both draw and return in one valve, but they have the plastic ***** and the ***** swell and then break the stem when you try to turn it.


I like it way better being able to let the fuel return into a different tank than that from which it came; there are several advantages to this.

Would I need any type of electric fuel pump near the tanks or would the stock lift pump on the motor be enough?

That sounds good to me. I'm sure I'll have to prime it to get fuel up to it first right? What kind of selector valves are good for the tanks? I was going to go with one JC Whitney sells, but they look pretty cheap. I'de prefer to go electric so I can switch it easily while I'm driving.

I was thinking of adding a tank on mine, and instead of having to switch between tanks, I was just going to add a 1" line between the two tanks. That way as you fill the front stock tank, the fuel would just transfer to the other tank and you would never have to worry about the valve. I have seen it on big trucks so it should work on out "little" ones.
