Fuel Milage

Don't want to beat a dead horse, but I drive a w350 single cab with 4:10 gears in the rear end and a 5spd. Last time I checked I was getting 16.5 or so mpg running b/w 60-70. Is this about what most of you get with a similar setup, just curious.

I JUST bought my 93 2wd CTD, all stock auto 141K miles... Drove down from Albuquerque to Tucson, got 23.2 mpg doing 80! (lots of hill climbs too and it had the power to climb any grade at 80) I just got back a few hours ago, I'll post some pics of the old beast later, but I think I'm already in love with this truck

Gears, gears, gears......I bet one of those 4.10 geared trucks pulls like a SOB, but the mileage does suffer. From what I understand that's about the norm. Maybe a little better if you really drive like a granny! FWIW my truck gets about 20 mpg in town and 22 on the highway. Yea it's a 3.54 geared truck. I know...the world hates a smartbutt.

Beats the **** out of me how trucks that are basically the same can be so far apart in fuel mileage. I could see gassers needing a tune up really bad and getting poor mileage but I do not see why 2 stock trucks would be almost 9 mpg different in mileage. No torque converter could slip that bad and still work.

I would assume going his speed 60-70 and my speed, 80 would both produce about the same rpm, (Mine's 3.54 gears, his is probably 4.10) I would assume he should be getting better gas mileage than me. Less wind resistance, going slower, same rpm and less frictional resistance with lower gears going the same speed... Maybe it's a timing issue?

I have 4:10 gears in my truck, bone stock could get me 21 mpg! That is out of 4 wheel drive, front hubs unlocked. I drive 60 mile round trip to work doing 60 most of the way and 10 of those miles are highway doing 65 to 70. When we had a snow storm (12 inches and snow drifts) a couple weeks back I lock my front hubs and used 4 hi most of the time and got 16 mpg. Also this gas mileage is related to how much I keep right foot out of the diesel pedal!! Cant do that though, love the sound and the power of that diesel.

Would bumping the timing help with the fuel milage any? If so, how much timing should I try.

Yes. 1/8" is standard procedure.

I had a 91 (nonIC) dually with 4.10s and the Getrag that got 20-22mpg at 65-70mph in Colorado. Moved to MO, and had to go 60 to see the same. In town was around 18-19mpg, IF I kept my foot out of it.

I bumped the timing a hair to help with smoke, and it took way less than 1/8" bump on the marks to get from 1.4 to 1.6mm. Free flowing exhauts and a bigger air filter helped.

I really don't get a lot of smoke now, so would bumping the timing still be worth a try. Also does the mm #s mean the amount the timing is actually advanced?
