Frozen Diesel
I had my first brush with frozen fuel this morning. It was -14f, made it out almost to the main road and it died. Called my son to come pull be to a station for some nice warm diesel from the the ground. Took him 45 minutes to get there and by then I was drifting in and out of Consciousness from the cold. Still had to crack two lines to get it to light after pumping some expensive crude in. That worked for about a mile, then it started running like I was burning gasoline instead of diesel. Barely made it to Albuquerque and it died in the Autozone parking lot. Of course, they were out of anti-gel fuel drier. Had to crack lines again to get it to NAPA. That did the trick.

Were not that cold here yet....but I've started running the Power service winter fuel additive already. Probably should throw some Power service diesel 911 stuff behind the seat just in case.

Is the fuel heater takin a crap on ya? I had some issues last year like that, then replaced the heater and Not an issue since.
The 90 Popped and farted and smoked and missed and stumbled all over itself this morning, it was -3 ish with a healthy windchill and it had been sittin since saturday. The 93 didn't want to go, weak battery plus no grids equaled a jump tonight its sittin plugged in right now. We'll see which one goes in the morning.

I think it's the friggin metal Fram canister filter I put on it this summer. I think it got water in it which of course froze. I wasn't showing but about 1psi of fuel pressure while it was acting up with an electric pusher up to the piston pump. One minute after I slammed a pint of the drier in ther she smoothed right out.

Can't believe you guys are getting those kinds of temperatures.... It was 60 degrees here, yesterday, and I'm looking forwards to the cold weather..
Send it up our way... please !

Hey T, come on out, we had snow in Phoenix the other day. The really cool thing about these parts is that you live close enough to snow to still enjoy it, but an hour later you are back living in 65 degree (that is considered cold here by the way). ...Mark P.S. the highest point in AZ is over 12000 feet and the high point in NM is over 13000 and may be over 14000 feet, I don't remember... I looked, it is 13016 feet in NM, but I think that there is a 14'er barely in southern Colorado...

No, he's talking about the grid heaters that cycle on and cause newbies like me to replace good alternators......Mark

ah yes, the equivalent of glow plugs in my '85 M-B 300TDT wagon (I thought he was talking about some in-line fuel heater I hadn't heard of)
almost impossible to start either engine when the fuel hasn't been pre-heated
I use block heaters in both of my diesels, and that makes a Big Difference in starting in sub-zero weather too (not to mention fresh, strong batteries)
