Front crack shaft seal

I called the local cummins dealer and ordered the seal part # 3904353 and gasket 3918673

They sent Me seal # 3937111 the seal was defective so I called for another seal they said it changed the # so they gave Me the 'right one' #3804899 the problem is that even when the seal fit tight on the front cover it doesn't look like it is touching the crankshaft to Me and I think I'm right.

Does anyone know the right part # for this, I would hate to put the accessories back and have it leak like a sieve later. BTW the front cover gasket does not fit either meaning the holes do not line up at least not all of them. I'd like to know if I'm crazy or *** is going on.

Thank You.

It sounds like you have a 2nd gen cover gasket. Did you give Cummins the CPL#?

The guy said He didn't need the engine serial if that is what You meant, I did say it was for an 89ctd that was in a dodge. I used ultra gray permatex for the cover I think it should hold fine but the seals I have 2 '3937111' and '3804899' this 2nd one fit just fine one the front cover lip but looks like it doesn't have a good grip on the crankshaft looks more like it is just around it. Is it supossed to shrink latter?

Thank You.

Did you use the seal install sleeve? They don't grip real tight, as long as it's touching it should be fine as long as the surface of the crank was clean and dry.

I used the sleeve and the crank was extra clean and extra dry. I have had many problem with this conversion due to incompetence from many sellers and I can see there is a small gap between the crank and the seal so I'm afraid to put it all together and have to fix yet a new thing .

I will call the guys at cummins this monday, I'm sure there must be an explanation to them selling Me two different part # seal. They look the same but one of them come with an extra rubber ring (more like rubber with metal inside) that I don't know where to put it.

Thank You.

That extra ring goes on the crankshaft after the new seal and cover has been installed. It goes on before the harmonic damper.

The ring acts as a dust shield.

I guess I'll have to call them with the engine serial # and find out now. I will post back since it would be a shame to have more of us 1st gen buying the wrong part.

They said they are both the same except '3804899' comes with a dust shield. They also said that one have to tell them if the seal need a grove sleeve I guess this is for the ones that are worn and need a seal that is tighter?

Well the part # for the one with the sleeve is 3802820 and it cost $90

Well thanks to the Good Manager at the cummins dealer I got My wear sleeve crankshaft seal. It looks similar to the other ones but comes with a steel sleeve before the plastic sleeve used to drive the seal I assume the metal sleeve has to stay between the crankshaft and the seal but My question is do I have to use some kind of thread looking adhesive?

I'm ready to install it now but I don't want to do anything wrong here this seal is expensive.

Thank You.

Any ideas on how to install the sleeve? I would think it should have some thread lock in it just in case right?

Hi,
I had to install ready sleeve on mine. I cleaned the crank real well. I then heated the ready sleeve in my oven to about 150 degrees in order to expand it. Then, just slide the sleeve in place and drive it on with a piece of tubing or a large socket. It goes on pretty easy if you don't let it cool too much.
Hope tis is what you were asking about.
Mike

Hi,
I did not use locktite. When the sleeve cools and shrinks, it's on there to stay.
