Fluctuating idle...

Wondering if anyone else has this issue?

Started a while back...When the truck is sitting on a grade with the nose pointing up hill the idle slows down. The reverse, with the nose point down hill the idle speeds up. I can't for the life of me figure out why it would be doing this? Only thing I can think of is my piston lift pump is not working as well as it should.

And to answer the question I'm sure will be asked...I do not have any fuel pressure gauges. IP was resealed about 10K ago.

Thoughts?

It's the orientation of the governor weights. That's what you get when your governor is only slightly more complex than the one on a Briggs & Stratton.

^^That's exactly it. It will also do that if you slam on the brakes while it crawling at idle.

Thank you for clearing that up. I was worried something might be going south in the IP or motor.

Try a new governor spring, I'm sure they get weak with age.

I've had my 3200 sitting on the self now for over a year and half...just haven't gotten around to installing it yet. But guess I can try that and see if it helps.

Thanks for the thought!

You know, I had never even considered this in the past. I always wondered why my idle would drop when I jam on the brakes in reverse to adjust the rear drums.

Well I finally got off my but and pulled the top cover off my IP and got my 366 spring in there...all I can say is WOW!

I'd read a few posts where people stated that the 366 was a great upgrade, but I can now see why. The truck seems to run smoother, I have a crisper throttle and it pulls way better up and over 2000 rpm. I compared my stock spring to the 366 and I think the old spring was stretched out a wee bit.

I also moved the throttle attachment ball on the IP to the inside, and turned my idle screw around for easier adjustments.

And the RPM seems a bit more stable. Still goes up/down a little bit, but no where near what it did with that old spring in there.
