First real project

I have started my project of taking out my '93 W250 CTD power train and putting it into to my 79 W200 Power Wagon. I have never done this magnitude of a project; last major project was full teardown of a few quads and dirtbikes. I have a good support stuff to help (as long as the brews are cold haha), I am very excited to see this come together.

Drove donor truck around for a few days with a rad flush kit in it, new oil and fresh fuel/additive. Did this to refresh the motor/fuel pump as it had been sitting for 4 years. Started tear down on Sunday, ended up at this point last night. It's gonna kill me not to be in the shop for the next few days.

Right now the plan it tear both trucks down to rolling chassis', wash then both (CTD is covered with oil/grime bumper to bumper underneath) the start the swap. Not sure right now about the dash, I know the CTD dash has been used in the older truck in these swaps before. As well the 79 is auto, 93 is manual, have to figure that out as well. All part of the fun tho!!

Nice project, but can I ask why? Wouldn't it be easier to swap body parts? Not trying to take away from your project, just asking.

i thought the dodge bodies from 67 to 93 where interchangable. maybe you can keep the cab you want and bolt up the fenders n box. no mess no fuss

I'd much rather keep and drive the club cab. You'll realize just how little room you have after driving a single cab for a while.

The club cab is rotton, passenger side floor is almost rusted through. Front fenders were as bad under the wheel well where they bolted together. Interior is eaten out by mice to, lil turds everywhere, rather not deal with the Hantavirus. I would have just flipped the body but the 79 isn't a CC so the frame is too long and I don't want to cut/weld the frame. With the group of friends I have helping this will be more fun then work, be done before we know it.

I would keep the 79 dash. I like the looks of them better! If you could find a good extended cab cab and put the 79 body parts and dash in it it would be neat. But livin with a reg cab isnt to bad Ive done it for 7yrs.

Dash is finally out!! Wow was that some fun, think you have and nope, still attached somewhere. Felt great to throw the dang thing on the shop floor. Box is ready to come off and so is the cab is very close. Chassis will be rollled outside to make room for the 79 this weekend I hope. Very handy using a shop on a friend's farm, bobcats & tractors make things a lot easier lol.

Finallly got everything off/loose on the CTD. Waiting on a picker or tractor to lift off box and cab. This past Sunday we decided to go get the '79 W200..and of course it turned cold then to, -20C thankfully no wind. She looks good behind that 3rd Gen...pulled the old lass like she wasn't even there.

I was told the 79 backed herself into place when they parked her 10+ years ago. So I want to see if I can get her fired up and moving on her own power for and giggles. I am pulling the gasser/drivetrain out as it is going into a 88 W100. If she won't run right away I will say screw it, start the teardown and buy a running engine when I do the 88 build. No patience....I want that 12 valve in it RFN lol.

Nice project. Sitting doesn't seem to hurt these things too bad. I parked my '91 for 5 years once in a field. Other truck died so I threw a battery into it and bumped the starter to see if it was locked up and it started immediately. The wasps who built a nest in the tailpipe were pretty off though.
I parked her again for 3 years recently and got to feeling guilty so I threw a battery in her 2 months ago, bumped the starter to see if it was locked up & she started right up. I felt guilty enough that I bought a complete new front end -king pins, wheel bearings, tie rod ends, spindle bearings, U-joints- Crossover steering, new calipers, pads, brake lines, 4" Skyjacker lift & a set of 35" tires with polished Pro-comp 1069 wheels. I bought her in '91 and figured she deserved some new parts after all these years.
Looking forward to seeing the completion of your project.

Lifting a gasser

Happy new year!!

I have my two trucks torn right done now. I am waiting to scrub clean the CTD...driver's side is soaked in oil, even outside of frame rail!!

I started to pull apart my 79 W200. Ready to lift off the motor/tranny (trans case lifted off after pic taken) but not sure how to go about this. Where and what do you bolt on for slings/chains?

Yes I am asking a gasser question on a diesel site but it it being pulled to put in a Cummins lol

Well you can do it 1 of 2 way's First is a chain from oppisiot sides of head's front to back or Second is use a carb lifting plate it has a lifting point made right into middle of plate where the carb bolt's too .Hope that help's .
