first diesel--a few questions!

awesome! just finished my second day of driving my new '93 D250--I'm loving it. 138 K, new injection pump, no rust, and she is smooth and fast, and looks new! full oil change records, which I really appreciate. Got a good deal on ebay, $6900, from an honest, really cool guy in California. Not cheap, but very fair I think. Sometimes you do a deal and realize there are still good people out there...
So, I'm wondering about the getrag. Oils never been changed, why does the owner's manual steer us wrong?!? I plan to change and overfill--but should I go straight to good synth and leave it in, or run a dino/synth blend for a few thousand miles to "free up the crud"? it shifts pretty nice now, a little notchy but quiet.
Also, I am 6'7" and wish I could get the bench seat back and down--even a half inch would seem like a mile. I've searched threads but not found much--wondering if anyone has had creative success here...
Also, I want to run biodiesel and I understand I ought to upgrade the lift pump. I'm not really interested in mods yet, and I wonder if a new OEM pump will be bio compatible, or do I need a piston pump?
Finally, the previous owner admits he didn't always idle the motor after his 40 mile commute to work, unloaded. (20,000 miles he owned it) Do you think he hosed the turbo?
Well, this site is great, I've been reading it constantly. I'm glad to join the club, and I am loving my new truck--my first 3/4 ton and first diesel--it's a whole new world of torque--and pedestrians get the hell out of my way now!! Thanks for all your help!

Well first off glad to see you aboard, the buys here have helped me countless times. Sounds like a pretty nice truck I think that we will have to see pictures of this rig When I got my truck I did all of the oils in it so I would know that they were fresh. For the getrag I know a lot of people are using full synthetic and have had great luck, but I am currently using the what the book calls for, but overfilled. As far as the seat is concerned I am not sure.

As for the turbo and the truck not being warmed up in the morning properly, you will never know of any damage until you look or until it fails. I don't think that the PO of my truck let it warm up and I am on the original turbo with 153k on it.

Welcome again and glad to see that you are happy with your buy

Actually, on the bench seat situation, the son is 15 yrs old, and some over nine foot tall, built like a rake handle.

Instead of lowering his seat, I put 1-1/4" square-tubing spacers, between the seat frame and sliders, RAISING his seat 1-1/4 inches.

Now, his knees are no longer past his ears and he is much more comfortable.

This has benefitted all of us in that we have such a better field of view.

Try it; you may be surprised.

Get the trans good and hot, dump it, then refill with the synthetic oil of your choice.

Turbo is likely fine.
