Wink Finally!(headgasket)

Man its relieving, Kinda like taking a great big long wizz. Its been almost a year but today I finally started the old girl up again. Once the bleeding was done and idle adjustment she ran good. I let it heat up til she was blowing nice and warm in the cab and then drained her to flush out the system.

I haven't done anything else yet should I torque the head for the first time now since that was the first heat cycle? Im a little confused on the proper intervals on when to retorque the head with studs. Am I suppose to loosen the nut first then torque again?

I'm not sure about what is recommended. I know you are suposed to lube the bolts/ studs, then torque them to 120ft-lbs. Recheck them in 2-500mi, I think. If anyone has a better idea, let me know. I am doing the same thing this weekend.

Torque for the first time?? I take it you DID torque the head studs to 120ftlbs before you ran the truck??

I think Haisley recommended after warming the engine up the first time, shut off and retorque hot. When doing retorques, loosen each nut/stud one at a time. I did it via the Cummins torque sequence/pattern. Lube everything, leave the studs in the block, lube the stud threads at top, lube the flat washer BOTH sides, and threads of the nut.

You mean your suppose to torque it before the first heat cycle!?! j/k

Yes I torque them first in the cummins sequence but I haven't retorqued it yet after a heat cycle. So with each retoque I have to re-lube the top of the stud and the washer? After the first retoque do I put about 100miles on it before the next?

Yes, lube it all. Did you use ARP molylube or engine oil? I retorqued once after first heat cycle, then again probly after 100 miles, so yeah that would work. Many don't mess with it after the first retorque after first heat cycle. It's up to you. Just be sure to lube both sides of the flat washer, nut and stud real good. This way you're tightening the nut on the stud and not just the stud into the block.

I used the ARP moly lube. I think in total I will probably retorque it 3 times. One now (first heat cycle) then 100 miles, then maybe thousand or so??

I have been reading every post you have made since it blew the oil all over your truck and many miles of road. I am glad to hear that you have brought it back to life. It must have been like having a sick family member that you nursed back to heath.

Oh man it was really nice hearing her run again. I like sitting in it waiting for it to heat up just to hear it run

I'll let you know how it goes once I get some miles on it
