Dually Wheel hub leak

I did the brakes on my 83 d350 Dana 70 rear end. I replaced the seals and the bearings while I was in there. I have only driven about 50 miles and noticed there was a leak of axle oil between the hub and the rim( see pic) I re used the crappy insert Chrysler adjusting nuts on the axle hub I have since ordered some Chevy nylon lock adjusting nuts, but does this look like the adjusting nut backed off and thus caused the leak? I know the seals were seated wel Thanks in advance Leak from between backing plate and wheel hub

Could be. I once thought I was carefully tapping the seal in the hub. Then last second realized the metal band had popped out of the seal. I also don't use the OEM nylon nut. I use the old school double thin nut and star washer. I have put them on all of my rigs and never had an issue. I will say I have seen the nut back off and the seal still not leak. I would say the seal lip is cut or possibly the wrong seal all together.

Seal may Have been damaged during install which is very easy to do if you don't put the drum on correctly. You pop the little spring off as mentioned earlier, ruining the seal

Or

May have used the incorrect seal

During the time I've owned this truck I found that there are two different seals that are listed. When I bought the truck it had a wheel seal leak just like you have. I pulled it apart and replaced it with the same number seal. Turns out that that seal is incorrect and it failed on me as well. The seals are slightly different inside diameter and one is too tight causing the leak. I wound up ordering two of the recommended seals and determine the correct one. No leaks since.

I too no longer use the nylon nuts. They're only good for one use. I now use the two thin knots that are reusable with the tabbed washer in between. I'll never go back to the nylon nuts

One thing that I discovered is that the side of the seal that that I thought goes goes inward is not the side that is correct. It's a bit counter intuitive. I had the same leak after new seals and I found a site that showed the correct side, I'll try to find it again...Mark

Also be sure your axle vent isn't clogged up.

If the wheel seal and its sealing surface on the spindle is good, the axle vent is where I would look.

Every couple years I remove and clean that nipple. Incredible how fast that gunks up.

When you go back in there, replace the seals with the kind that turn inside themselves. Not the the kind that spin on the axle. I have had great success using those. Good Luck

Loudhornsrule I have never seen that type of seal for rear hub. Only for the D60 front axles. I agree they are very nice and do hold up nicely as the ones I have seen were made by Spicer. But I have never seen that type of seal for the D70/D71 rear hubs. If you have please share as I would be interested. PMschmitt the hub seal number you need for a dually (D70-71) rear is Timken #455086 or NOS 30033 at Napa. I've had great luck with the Napa seal.

Federal Mogul NA370150BG1 . I have used these on my 3.07 and 3.54 3/4 ton rear axles. Not sure about the spindle size on 1 ton, but probably will work. Bought them at a Freightliner dealership. They work. It turns inside itself. Good Luck

Freight train how about a part number for the front Dana 60 axle seal you just talked about? I have seen them for the rear but not for the front yet?

Deere here is what I have seen people use. Spicer #50491 or Napa #NOS 15553. Please note I believe in using quality products and try to stay up with new and improved parts but I am not rich so I stick with Spicer #36487 or Napa #NOS 15692.

Loudhorns the inner hub bearing/seal on a dually is larger than a single wheel. The outer bearing/race is the same but the inners are different. So that seal wouldn't work on a dually rear. I tried to cross over the FM number with Napa and no luck. Odd to as Napa sells FM gaskets. Maybe its a "they have to call" item. I hear that all the time, LOL.
