drove my 78 crew cab home
well i finally got my crew cab that i bought from the goverment. it was two hundred plus miles away at a local fire dept. weather here has been bad lately did not want to haul it if i could drive it. they said it needed tuned but other than that it was fine. i fly in to pasco washington and get a taxi out to the fire station to get a look at what i had bought online. ok ding here and there no rust ok i need to get going. fire the ol gasser up running on 7 if i am luckey and so rich it burns the eyes. couldn't bring tools onboard plane with carry on so i got nothing with me. ask dad to keep around home with his pu and car trailer ready to come fetch me if i don't make it home. this rig has 4 brand new ten plys on it and it is 25 degrees f. out. out of the driveway i go right onto the freeway , oh by the way don't trust the gas gauge they tell me and the exhaust leaks alot under the cab and those holes in the transfer case boot don't hurt nothing. i start out at 40mph took 25 miles to get tires round again. stop fill her up with gas. three gallon. on the road , finally get brave and run her up to 55mph. wind is coming thru windows and door jambs . got heater on works well. gas and exhuast fumes and wind noise gives me nice headache , open window only to pull in more fumes , close window count miles. call home on cell phone to give them updates on my progress. stop in biggs junction oregon fill with gas 5 gallons or so grab sandwich pop a headache pill on the road. made it home in 5hours never left me stranded wipers and lites worked. should have bought spark plug and wrench before i left. brain cell recovering , the one left. power steering and brakes worked great. now starting to look for a donor cummins five speed 4x4. the hunt is on.!! this looks to have no rust under it.
There's a good potential donor here:

I bought a 77 3/4 ton M880 from the GSA a few years ago. It cost me $275 and I drove it home. I ende up getting rid of it when thetranny had problems and I wanted to get away from the 8 mpg gas engine. it was a tough truck though. It also came from an eastern WA fire dept.

thanks for posting the pic for a computer challenged old guy. thats it . i gave 1675 for it and other that it needs new plugs and an exhaust it was ok. . has the pto outlet but the winch itself was broken and removed but they left the grill gard and bumper. drove it home with no plates or temp. police rarely pull over another gov. entity for license issues. spent all day at dmv here to get title changed. after waiting two hours in the morning i get to front of line only to be told that they need to inspect the vin # before issueing a oregon title. drove her to town and got inspection all went well. hey it even has a rear seat heater. pullling a gooseneck most the time i will sell the utillity box and try to find a short box to put back on it. only couple drips of oil out of drain plug other than that all clean underneath. thanks for pointing out how to post i have been stuck on that one for a while.
I have a good friend who is a local used car dealer. Two weeks ago there was an online dealers auction in NY near Monticello. There was a driveable 4WD crew cab city truck, had a nice body, and came with a walk in utility body that brought $600 and didn't sell. He contacted the auction and the seller wanted $700. The seller said he might have transportation and would contact him if he could arrange it. That didn't happen so the deal fell through.
The same dealer friend said that before GSA Sales & Government Liquidation came along the government was using regular auto auctions to dump their used vehicles. He said he was at a North Eastern VA auto auction back then and there was a line of nice 80's Dodge crew cabs that came through. Nobody wanted them and they ended up selling in the $400 range. Amazing what effect the internet has on changing values.
I currently have a 90 Dodge 4WD Cummins donor truck and a repairable 77 crew cab but I would like to find a better crew cab. At the current prices I am tempted and might be further ahead to build a second gen version. There was a clean high mileage rust free gasoline 1500 series 4 door on Craigs List last week for $3500.
