Does exhaust pipe length matter?

Hey everyone!
I saw a few exhaust pipe setups I liked today but I am not sure if they are good for the engine or not. I did not get any pictures so I will describe them as best as I can.

1. It basically looked like somebody took the turbo down pipe, flipped it so was sticking straight up, and cut a hole in the hood so it could clear. It looked like it was at least chrome polished, if not stainless steel 4" tubing with a 45* elbow at the top so it (barely) cleared the cab.

2. The outlet hole for the exhaust was coming through the front fender in between the wheel well and the cab on the passenger side. Looked like somebody cut like a 4.5" hole in the fender and made an exhaust pipe to lead to it.

3. The outlet was under the truck just behind the cab. I liked how it looked but it is kind of in the way for four-wheeling.

4. Stacks on the outside of the bed. Led to the back of the cab and went straight up like normal stacks, just the pipe went through the side of the bed under the floor and up along the outside of the bed. Kind of neat but kind of dumb at the same time.

I really liked how the first setup looked. If you need a better visual image the old tractors that the pipe went straight up... I would be worried about noise and backpressures and everything though. I know on gas motors if the exhaust pipe is too short it won't get enough heat away from the engine bay and start cracking and warping things.

A short pipe won't hurt the engine, but AFAIK every state requires the exhaust to discharge behind the passenger compartment.

On a turbocharged engine, the best exhaust is the least exhaust.

in TX it has to discharge behind, beside, or above the passenger compartment

I believe that the exhaust must be 6" away from any door opening, If it is closer, it must be covered/protected from a person touching it.

So straight out the hood with a heat shield should be completely legal. I wish I could have gotten a picture. I thought it looked so cool. And where I do a lot of four-wheeling it would be out of the way from getting smashed. Thanks for the input guys. How loud do you think it would be though?

I would think that would be extremely loud. There's no getting away from it either. Driving down the highway usually quiets everything down because the sound is moving away from the truck but straight out of the hood would still make your ears hurt after awhile.
It would look super awesome though IMO

i thought about that a little while back, the noise +legality reasons are what stopped me! even if it's not technically illegal, if a cop pulls you over for it and can't legally write a ticket for that, i PROMISE they could find something!
