Dodge Fans & Fan clutches-

Ok Guys,

So I'm thinking of updating/replacing my factory 1991.5 fan/fan clutch combo. I know Dodge superceeded the GEN 1's to the 94-98 7 Bladed Gen II's.

But I believe those are long gone new.

So I'm digging around. Will a 24V fit? I find it strange ...

98 24 V Fan clutch is 52028615AB where the 12V is 52028760.
2000 24V is 52028894AA cluch and 52028893AA Fan.

Obviously distance to radiator didn't change, so I'm guessing the differences will be in the radiator fan shroud?? Anyone get one of these later (improved ones??) to work in their GEN 1 truck.

Michael

The 24V clutch looks to be same basic unit....I can't see why it wouldn't work. As for the fan. They used the same basic fan from 91.5 to 2002 if I'm not mistaken. There is no new fans for 1st or 2nd gen trucks. Few NOS ones but they want almost $500 for one now. Used ones are up in the $200 range.

I came across someone selling some new fans for our trucks. Same style as the 3rd gen's, plastic fan blades with a metal center hub. They claim it cools well.

Search up "Dodge Cummins Deisel AM Fan Blade" to check them out.

I've been looking for a clutch that would move my fan out from my motor farther, to clear my Fluidampr, but have not found anything yet.

They '91.5-'02 fans do look basically the same.
The later ones have some bent ribs added to the fan to stiffen them up, I am assuming.
I have spare clutch fans for all years of the 12V and 24V, in my shop, PM me if you need one.

Trashing you could look into a different Fan hub to get that added clearance.
I am remembering two different fan hubs and pulleys over the years on the 12V.
I want to say the NON I/Ced trucks came with a fan hub that stuck out a little more than the later year 12Vs.
I will check some motors after lunch for you.

The NON I/Ced fans are smaller in over all fan blade diameter, to go along with the smaller rad and fan shroud.
The blades themselves are a little "fatter" if you will and 7 blade.
PapeCat, PM me your E-mail and I can send you a few pics. of the various 12V clutch fans.

You might consider simply slipping a washer in the clutch's hub just before spinning the clutch back on its bearing/shaft. Approximately an eighth inch worked for me.

I check some motors after lunch and the '89-'91 12V ran a different fan hub and pulley set up.
It looks like it would push the clutch fan forward quite a bit, maybe 3/4s of an inch, if swapped with a '91.5-'93 fan hub and pulley.

You are correct Oliver...but it also changes the location of the fan in respect to the shroud...so you can't do unless you either run a homemade shroud, or no shroud.

BC847...I already have a 3/8 washer in there, with the clutch fan being held on with maybe 3 threads....can't really go out any farther.

I wonder if there is some industrial application that would work better.

I think at some point cummins changed belt routing. That makes the fan spin the wrong direction. Think that was w 24v but maybe it was 2003?

Hoping you could tell me here. Forum seems to indicate the 96+ seven bladed fan cools better?

Geez, hard to believe no replacements.

Did I mention I have at least 20 Cummins replacement clutch fans of ALL years ['89-'02] on my shop shelf?

Flex Fan is alive and well. Using their parts you can put together any combination of fan, flex fan, clutch, spacers, etc that you'd need to fit any combination of parts you are driving or planning to drive. Their catalog has good instructions on how to figure out exactly what you need.

I had a 48 Chevy truck with a wild cam in it. (6 cylinder 235, believe it or not.) It threw fans through the hood and radiator on a regular basis till I put a flex fan in it. Flex-A-Lite invented that thing, and also the first electric automotive fan.

Yes, they did. That came with the CR engines in 2003 due to a now, external belt driven powersteering pump. An idler pulley directly above the fan hub and pulley for proper rotation of the PS pump.

Turbo Auto Diesel sells an electro magnetic fan clutch with a plastic fan (think big rig style). It's a really nice setup.

Flex a lite

Has any one out there put a fixed blade flex a lite on their pre 91 1/2 12v's if so do you just need spacers or is there some necesary modificatons. Also how bad did it affect your feul economy?
