Question DIY-water/meth-injection

Need to know about the components and instructions for a cheap do it yourself-water methanol injection-the search was useless-come on Dave chime in! Thanks Zane Poor

I didn't D.I.M. I bought a kit. I think Loch built his, though.

You can get the same pump I have from Northern Tool, it's the high capacity Shurflo sprayer pump.

Would you go single stage or double stage like yours-thanks Dave-also sent you a PM! PS- I found a pump at Snows for $40-how big are your nozzles? Any help would be appreciated!

I've been thinking about this as well, what sort of flow do you need for a pump? Where are you injecting the mix?

Mine is a single stage - Snow calls it Stage II because it has a bigger pump and the controller can handle higher pressures. The controller is the really cool part about Snow's kit. It starts the pump at a 50% duty cycle and increases the duty cycle as boost pressure rises. The point that the pump starts and where it gets 100% duty cycle are adjustable, mine kicks in at 20 psi and gives full flow at 35 psi.

I have two of Snow's 625 ml nozzles.

Injected here.

The pump you want: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...Id=9414&R=9414

That pump will put out nearly 200 psi, it's just rated to flow 1.8 GPM @ 60 psi. You don't need near that much flow, but you need to have over 100 psi pressure. Pressure is adjusted with an allen screw on top of the pump.

OK heres basic parts list, will need a few misc like a fuse and things of the sort, i posted a scematic in my gallery, i did not use a dual system, mines is progressive dependant on boost, but its to complicated and im redoing it, any questions throw em at me or Dave, one of us can help,,good luck

1-- Pump. Need high pressure. Used the Sureflo Pump. 145psi. 1.8 gallons/minute. $110.00

2-- Solenoid Valve (need 2 for a 2 stage system): Used to turn on and off the flow after the pump. The pump may keep pumping for a while after the power has been cut. Putting the Solenoid in the line after the pump gives the ability to cut off the supply quickly. Power-Aire 32k5DGV-12VDC $27

3-- Nozzle (need 2 for a 2 stage system): I did not use them but because of their quick connectors the Aquamist nozzles are worth the extra expense.

4-- Pressure Switch (need 2 for a 2 stage system): Hobbs adjustable pressure switch ~27$.

5-- Water Line: Aquamist has 4mm line for $2.75 a meter.

6-- Fittings for Solenoids: Only needed if solenoids don't have same fitting as Quick connectors. The solenoids above worked great.

7-- Fittings for Pump: Home Depot.

8-- Vacuum Line for pressure source:

9-- Vacuum Line "T" for splitting boost source to 2 pressure switches.

10-- Automotive Relay for pump power.

11-- Electrical wire:

12-- Switch for enabling the system, and optionally each nozzle's solenoid

13-- LEDs for monitoring when stages come on, may find in switch

14-- Inline Filter before pump: Any parts store fuel filter. ~4$

Sweet sweetness guys... I will go water injection in a few years since I want to avoid an intercooler.

This is cool, but I have one question: don't a lot of the tractor pullers run setups with up to nine nozzles? And what happens if you inject too much water?

Well, if you inject a little too much water the engine will bog. Inject way too much water and you'll hydro-lock it. That's why you want to sneak up on it instead of starting with the system cranked all the way up.

Two nozzles is plenty for the amount of power we make. The tractor pullers use belt driven pumps, too. The more air you are pushing through, the more water you can inject. 2 or 3 turbos and 50% larger engines mean they are moving way more air than us.

Dave thats a great point on sneaking up, when we build our systems theres a lot of research others like snow and aquamist have done, that we need to do on our own. Theres two ways we can do this, first, math at 2400 rpm a cummins can deal with around 3 gallons an hour, but drop your rpms and theres a big problem ( ever see inside of hydro locked engine ? ) So we need to stay away from that outside line. Second way is trial and error but thats not the greatest idea with a diesel engine.

Thats the reason for dual stage injection, not because you cant get nozzles big enough but so you can inject more at differant boost or rpm's. nozzle on mine will inject 1.8 gallons per hour at 60 psi, im running a 150 psi pump so that is raised up very close to that no no line. But mine injects two ways first it needs 9 lbs of boost to activate and a TPS controls voltage to the pump, this allows me to vary my pump pressure output so injecting too much at low rpms isnt likely to happen.

Just in case a few are not understanding hydro lock, air compresses water doesnt. So if theres enough water in a cylinder it cant be compressed to explosion point, in this case something has to give. And that would be your rods/head gasket/pistons, trust me it wont be pretty, to see your rods looking like pretzels. So research a bit listen to others and work your way up slowly as you know what your engine can deal with.

Is the pump that you have listed the same one that comes with the Snow Stage II kit, or slightly different?

The Shurflo I linked to will put out nearly 200 PSI. It is rated for flow (1.8 gpm) at 60 psi, that is not its max pressure.

I got my nozzles from Snow. He does sell stuff seperately.
