Diamond Eye Exhaust

I currently have the DE Exhaust on my truck.. The downpipe is rusting away.

The kit comes with a muffler (which I have), and without, utilizing the -RP notation on the part number K4211A. With the -RP (which means replacement pipe), you don't get a muffler, and run a straight through exhaust.

Is there a significant sound difference, straight pipe, vs Muffler ?

I would like to order a new kit, and was contemplating not dealing with a muffler, and having less to rot away.

Thanks

T.

Everything I read in the past before making the same purchase was "yes." Without the muffler there is a lot of drone.

When my 4" straight pipe rotted out my research (mostly from here) led me to buy the Diamond Eye with a muffler. It sounds good but helps with the noise level in the cab. I'm happy.

I have a complete DE set up on my '91.0, Poncho with a muffler.
I also have a DE exhaust on the Gauntlet, my '89 RC that I didn't put a muffler on as there was little room.
I like the sound of both and don't notice any drone on long highway trips on either rig.

I will be installing a stainless DE exhaust on my '78 RC build, and I have not decided on a muffler or not. I most likely will install a muffler as I plan to drive around topless almost all the time.

I tried a straight pipe and it got old real quick, the drone/unable to have a conversation. I installed a DE with a muffler and it's much more civilized, I wouldn't go back to muffler delete.

If you think it's loud on the inside, it's worse on the outside. I got to hear one without before I bought mine. Got the muffler. The new muffler is quieter than the old stock one to.

I don't think it makes much of difference in the cab.

Placed the order today with Summit Racing.

Amazon had it about $12 cheaper, but Summit matched, and beat the price by a dollar. Silly, eh ?

I took the downpipe out today to inspect and clean up the mess left behind by the trans shop. When I scraped the rust off the downpipe, it looked like swiss cheese. Go figure, eh ?

Thanks again, fellas.

How far the exhaust outlet is from the driver, and the direction it points makes a difference. My worst drone was when the pipe ended by the steady bearing.

I don't find the 4" straight pipe over the axle on my W250 any louder than the 3" w/muffler turned out ahead of the tire on my D250. YMMV.

I ran straight pipe for a year or two after buying the crewcab, but eventually had a 4" straight flow through diesel muffler given to me so installed it.....way better! I would not consider running without one. I am still running old OEM and aftermarket replacemtn pieces in my exhaust....still holding on at almost 9 years now. Although I do have one small hole starting on my tailpipe section....but I have a spare to use. One day i will pony up for a new 4" system, but since I drive year round up North I will most likely bite the bullet and buy a SS system.

My truck had a straight pipe when I bought it. Eventually I'll spring for the 4 inch system WITH muffler. With all the other noises the extra doesn't seem that bad but I don't remember what one sounds like with a muffler.

So, I placed my order with Summit, and had it within 2 days. They're awesome.....

Today, I pulled the old exhaust down, as a few years back, I customized it by cutting it back further to be able to access the torque converter bolts, and remove my front spring bolts on the passenger side. No more "in the way".

The New system came today, and I decided not to toss the original system in the trash, just yet. It's still functional, and not really rotted. Just the front downpipe was rotted. I cut the new pipe to the required length to match the old cut off connection I made a few years back. This allowed me to install the new "hole and rust free" pipe, and not have to change out the entire system. I'll save that for another day when it's nice and warm out.

Put the new pipe in, put my new clamp in place, which allows complete disassembly when necessary, and at some point, I may just weld the cut piece to the downpipe, and lose the clamp all together.

BTW.. Since my truck is an auto, I don't like the downpipe too close to my coolant lines. I purposely "Dimple" the down pipe so that it can be moved further towards the passenger side, and not rest against the framerail. It doesn't affect flow, and gives more clearance away from the trans.

Fun day. 40*F lying on my back... is always a fun day.
