Mine was just rusted on my 92. Took me an hour or so of PB Blaster and wiggle to get it freed up. I had to take out the whole assembly to get it to work. The guy I got it from had a bungee cord holding it shut.

My drivers side is like that, have to wiggle the handle up and down, while trying to flip that little tab up. At least no one can steal my gate....

Yea a pain. The little rods inside the tailgate just needs some TLC and a few bad words because they are a pain to work on. But the end result is a smooth working unit. Have fun and good luck with it.

Often the metal pieces on the latch on each side need tweaked back straight where the actuator rod hooks into them. You'll get it fixed once you get it apart, not a hard deal once you do a few of them.

YUP, Mine were bent also and its easy to spot it when its all apart. They bend and then there is not enough movement to pop the latch.

The little clip was missing on the end of one of my rods. The rod fell down in there and it was only releasing on one side. New clip and she works like new.
