dana 70 or dana 70U?
I have read tht there are two dana 70's. The difference being the spline count on the axles shafts. What one does my truck have and will a ring and pinion kit fit both since the only difference seems to be that spline count?

The ring and pinion will fit both. The 350 axle has more teeth than the 250. The spider gears have to match the axles, for as the number of teeth they have. So one can make eather axle work, if the spider gears are changed out to match the axle.
With that be said, I am speaking about single wheel 350 axle to a 250 axle.

It's hard to know what all Dodge was/is thinking when it comes to equiping vehicles. I have a 70U (the light duty model, supposedly) with 35 spline axleshafts. Go figure Your best bet is to get the Bill Of Materials # off the passenger side axletube and call your local Dana/Spicer dealer, or a place like Randy's Ring and Pinion and have them decode it for you so you know for sure what you've got. I thought the 70U was the Dodge-only 3.07? Maybe I was wrong?
I agree with G1625S- get the BOM number off the tag on the diff cover. Where on the axle tube should one look? Passenger side, front, back, top, bottom? I have a D80 with no tag info.

Generally the BOM is found on the passenger side axle tube facing toward the back of the truck, though it really depends on weather or not the axle got rotated during assembly. The BOM is hand stamped by the assembler at the factory so some of the stampings may be more or less clear. You'll likely have to scrape off 15 or so years of crap before you even get a hint that it's there. Then it'll be time for the emery cloth

The 70-U has smaller carrier bearings (narrower). The ring and pinion are the same and not all 350's have 35 spline shafts, My 92 4x4 350(SRW) had 32 spline as did most. I got a set of 35 spline shafts out of a 90 2wd 350 (SRW). It only takes about 30 seconds to pull a shaft and see. You can have 32 or 35 in the 70 or 70-U. I have been in a lot of rear ends and have blown my 70-U Power lock in half and trashed the ring and pinion. I replaced the hole axle with the one out of the 90 because it only had 61K on it and I was in a rush.
